We've got flights in and out of Naples booked for next month (delayed honeymoon trip) and want to explore some of the Amalfi coast. We know we're going to have a night in Naples and then three nights in Capri but are a little stuck on what to do afterwards.

Do we stay near Sorrento or split our time between here and one of the towns south of Positano. We'll darn't drive so relying on buses and boats.

Anyone got any tips / recommendations?

Cheers!

There's a train that runs up and down from Naples to Sorrento and probably further down to Positano etc. Can be used for Pompeii if that's on the agenda. Probably come in handy.

We've stayed in Sorrento which is lovely and I can recommend it, but I recently heard it's the most expensive tourist destination in Europe (or something like that.)

Just go, wander around and eat stuff. Love Italy!

Edit - or if you train it to Sorrento, at the station there, there's plenty of tourist, hop on/off buses which run down to and round the Amalfi coast

We stayed in a small town called Priano, it was lovely! “The path of the gods” coastal walk was amazing. Personally I find towns like Positano too touristy, YMMV

Went to amalfi for honeymoon. Lovely place. Bus goes over the hills to Sorrento then train to Amalfi. Obviously you can go to Pompei Herculaneum, Capri. I’d recommend going to a football match in Naples. It’s their religion and even if you don’t really like football, it’s a cultural thing.

Go to Vietri and buy a nice plate.

Stayed on the Amalfi coast for a week couple of years ago. Hired a car to get about, scariest foreign driving I've ever undertaken. Got used to it by the end though, just drive around leaning on the horn with your eyes half closed seems to be the best course of action. Beautiful part of Italy, agreed its a bit touristy in parts but I don't think you'll go far wrong wherever you end up

three nights in Capri

Sorry to say, you'll be bored off your tits after 1/2 a day.

Sorrento is lovely, personally I'd try and swap my booking to there and take a boat trip if you really must. As suggested Pompei and Vesuvius are well worth a visit. Both can be done the same trip unless you want a full day in Pompei, same stop on the little train.

+1

Pompeii + Vesuvius is one day. Herculaneum 1/2 day. Both well worth it. Football season will be over but you might be able to get a stadium tour at Napoli.
Capri only worth a 1/2 day boat trip imo.
Sorrento is lovely, never made it to Amalfi or Positano. Ischia is another boat trip, don’t know if it’s any better or worse than Capri.

Road trip from Naples to/from Sorrento is a nightmare, let someone else do the driving. Or use the train (circumvesuviano?)

We never found Sorrento expensive, in fact we found an amazing wee outdoors pizza place that did the best pizza I'd ever had and was ridiculously cheap. Elsewhere pricing just felt average, apart from Ravello (just uphill from Amalfi) where we had a stunning meal with wine, starters, even wee amuse bouche from the chef, all for about €80, with a view out over tge Amalfi coast into the bargain 😎

Agree with all the above. Don’t drive. Try to do some walking in the hills above the Amalfi. Naples is bonkers. Sorento is lovely. Oh, and do a boat trip around Capri. It’s more interesting than being there.

Agree switch to Sorrento but try and get up the hill a bit away from the main road through. It’s a great base for Vesuvius, Naples and surrounding towns. Herculaneum is amazing much better than Pompeii. Hire a car if your brave and tour the coastal villages. We loved Amalfi and Minouri. The food is amazing. Sorrento is quite a chill place at night. Looking out over the Bay of Naples at night with a limoncello.

+1 for the path of the gods (Sentiero degli Dei).

I made a big big day out of it by starting at Furore and heading straight up the steps from the coast up to the hills above, followed the ridge to Molare (climbable vua a wee gully at the back) then descended into Bomerano to join the Sentiero degli Dei back to Furore.

Wee walk report here:

Thanks, we have decided to split our time between sorrento and priano as they seem well positioned and have some reasonably priced accommodation.

Now need to work on the idea of cycling up mt Vesuvius !

Cheers

The Funivia Monte Faito (chair-lift) is well worth going on. Fantastic views on the ride up and at the top.

I fancied riding Vesuvius and regretted not doing it, looks like a spectacular wee road, steep in places and a bit grubby though.

The one road I reeeeeally want to get back to is the Via Quisisana, looks like a spectacular climb up from Castellammare di Stabia to the top of Mt Faito, something like 35 hairpins, many cobbled, and views to die for (I've not ridden it, just perved over it on Google Streetview).

Edit: D'oh, beaten to it by BertMason!
