Exactly 365 days since I quit the booze today, yeah I know 0.5% is still alcohol but it's a line I'm happy with.
I used to train and ride a lot before the kids came along so I was never a day in day out drinker, hardly ever on a school night. Weekends were a bit of a different story, living alone for the majority of the last 10 years meant at least 2 cans of ale followed by a bottle of red as standard on a Friday and Saturday minimum - then getting up for a 3/4hr road ride each weekend morning with the club.
As most of my mates a settled there were a lot of Saturdays when I'd have the above then have a wander into town to watch a covers band and have a few more beers, nothing negative ever happened, I'm a pretty happy drunk, and only ever really spoke to people if they spoke to me so wasnt trying to chat lasses while sat at the bar blind drunk, oh, and when mates were out, like at a wedding or an annual get together or something it was a full on freshers week episode and waking up not really remembering anything at all.
I'm separated and my lads (twins) are 2yrs old so part of stopping was due to me wanting to give them my best, I can get frustrated with them at the best of times but adding a hangover into the mix would be terrible, plus I'm saving a few quid, able to get up and function first thing, and yeah it's like your cheating on the weekend being up and spritely at 6.30am!
I've started to go out and watch bands now but with whatever non-alcho drink they have at the bar, I do really like the taste of beer so I've drank every weekend pretty much but always 0.0% - 0.5%. I'm a bit awkward socially in new surroundings and there's been at least once while at a bar I've thought about having a normal pint to calm my nerves but have resisted so far.
I'm still loving the change at the moment and can't see me goin back any time soon.
A longer post than I'd meant but wanted to say to anyone thinking about it that it is doo-able, a couple of years ago a year off the booze would have been completely unthinkable, especially living alone on those solo weekend nights.
Sounds like a real positive change in your life mate.
Good for you I say.👍
Well done you 🙂
Brilliant story. Good on you 👏
Thanks.
I need to catch up with the non-alcho thread on here re alternative drinks, it's super market specials at the moment, Brooklyn Special Effects is probably my fave so far, Infinite session or the Pilsner Lidl do as an early evening go to.
Great story, thanks for sharing. I'm rapidly approaching 40 and the sauce really doesn't agree with me any more. Went cold turkey for three months last year and felt amazing by the end of month two. Made me reflect and realise just how much of your energy, life and vitality even a moderate amount of drinking takes away. I've had the odd beer here and there and had a good few at my brother's wedding last September but ever since that three month break I've found it impossible to get any pleasure at all out of drink.
