As promised earlier in the "Steve's Garage" thread, here's a new one to share what I still have available in terms of 1"-to-the-mile OS maps.
My dad died early last year, and from the spare room at his house, I acquired a box of perhaps 100 6th & 7th series 1” maps, along with a smaller number of slightly more recent maps (I’m going to call them 8th series for simplicity) at the same scale. Advertised a few of them on eBay, and have offloaded a few that way for pretty small amounts of money – they went for about 50p each in the end – so I gave that up and have hung onto what remains.
If the image posting works, here’s pictures of them, sorted (quite loosely) into geographical order from north to south; I’m aware it’s not very accurate
7th series Teesdale, Durham, Redcar & Ripon
7th series Leeds, Blackburn, Scarborough & Pickering
7th series Huddersfield, Manchester & York
7th series Fishguard, Cardigan & Dollgellau
7th series Bala, Snowdon & Anglesey
7th series Cheltenham, Coventry/Rugby & Ludlow
7th series SW London, Fakenham, Bedford/Luton, Huntingdon
8th series Blairgowrie, Newcastle. Isle of Man
8th series Pickering, Scarborough, Liverpool
8th series Snowdon, Anglesey, Denbigh
8th series Pwllhelli, Chester, Dolgellau
8th series Stoke, Buxton/Matlock, Shrewsbury, Stafford, Burton on Trent
8th series Norwich, Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft
8th series Kidderminster, Brum, Gloucester
8th series Aberystwyth, Montgomery (x2), Fishguard
8th series Llandovery, Brecon, Carmarthen, Swansea
8th series Cardiff, Bristol & Newport, Bristol & Stroud, Oxford/Newbury
Miscellaneous
Northern Scotland 0.25” to the mile
Ilfracombe & Lundy 1:25,000
Midlands 0.25” to the mile
If anyone wants one or more of these, feel free to get in touch
Try a PM (although I believe it’s not working at the moment) or failing that richardjanet at talktalk<dot>net
Please do just bear in mind I may not be able to post them out in the immediate future, given the difficulties of getting hold of packaging and postage materials in the current circumstances.
Edit: Nope, the image links have failed miserably. Sorry about that. They should be clickable
I was going to suggest this!
I am keen for north scotland blairgowrie and aberystwyth (dad went to uni)
So... What are you looking for each one?
Free I would imagine. Otherwise this is an advert and needs to be in the Classifieds.
Ah sorry i knew the were "cost of postage" i was really meaning "what charity would you like a small donation to?"
PM & email sent.
Sorry - been away from the laptop for the evening.
Cougar is correct, I'm simply looking for good homes for as many of them as I can organise.
Have received a couple of PMs, which I'll happily respond to tomorrow. So that's N Scotland, Blairgowrie, Aberystwyth, Teesdale, Durham, Newcastle & Glos/Malvern spoken for, by the look of things.
Any more for any more?
Popped you an email about Leeds & Bradford, if it's still available thanks.
Id love the
7th series Fishguard, Cardigan and Dollgellau and the 7th series Bala, Snowdon & Anglesey ones if they're going please!
I think of someone had more imagination and skill than me, the maps could be turned into wallpaper for a room.
I'd love the Buxton & Matlock one - I'll drop you a PM 🙂
Dibs please on the Huddersfield one, it's where I used to live and revised in the year of my birth. I'll send a pm to sort out postage to Spain. Thanks for doing this, my OS map collection of a similar amount was donated to the Huntsman pub in Thurlstone when we moved here.
Can I stake a claim for the East Anglian ones please?
8th series Norwich, Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft
I did much the same with my dads eclectic collection of 1" and newer maps. He must have cleared out some of the really older (and interesting) ones though, I was mostly left with a handful of local 1" and a slew of out of date 1:50 000s.
Used some to bulk up my collection, but the ones that were widely out of date (they were old RAF surplus maps) I donated to local DofE groups to practice map reading - they could happily cut them up if needs be to make the work more manageable.
Followed up my message with an email about the York one.
Many thanks - superb resource for our boys to compare to what they see and the current 1:50
I've emailed you about the Chester one.
Many thanks
Hi all,
I've had quite a bit of interest in various of these maps now, thanks for that. Glad to put them to use.
In the last day or so, I received emails and addresses from a number of people (and have also renewed acquaintance with some I used to trailquest with 20-odd years ago - Hello again Pistonbroke!)
Tried to contact a couple of people through the site's Personal Messages system to ask for postal addresses, but I think maybe a couple haven't got through. So...
@joshvegas - I have you down for N Scotland, Blairgowrie & Aberystwyth
@spandex_bob - I have you down for the Gloucester & Malvern map
@johnnystorm (Nigel) - your name's against the onesin East Anglia
@kendonagasaki - you're looking for the Chester map
Could the four of you drop me an email (richardjanet <at> talktalk <dot> net) with your home addresses please?
@thelawman i've dropped you a message about the Kidderminster and Brum maps
Mine arrived today, thanks! 🙂
So did mine. Many thanks. I'll email you for payment details and make the donation to stw that I pledged. Looking forward to a bit of map geekery.
Glad to hear they're starting to arrive. All have been posted out over the last few days to everyone who's given me their addresses, am just waiting to hear back on the email from @joshvegas (PMs dont appear to be getting through to him)
Dont bother about refunding the postage, all I've asked is for a contribution or two to STW, or your nearest Mt Rescue team, or Coastguard/RNLI, or Dementia UK.
Mine arrived last night Richard, many thanks for your generosity.
Cheers 👍
Mine arrived today. Really appreciated thank you.
I appear to have also received an erroneous Blackburn and Burnley map though! If anyone requested this, please let me know and I'll send it on.
@bearnecessities - I think I threw the Blackburn/Burnley map into the envelope on the basis that was the adjoining one to the one you requested, so you might as well have it. If my geography is miles out, I'm an idiot...
Oh I see! Well thanks very much; I'll look after them both 🙂
Glos + Malvern arrived with this morning's post, thank you for your generosity! Beer tokens to MRT on their way now...
Sorry for the delayed thanks, but seriously a massive thanks. Maps received safe and well. I'm not sure if you are aware, but there was an unexpected 2nd World War version folded into the Chester one. It's very interesting to look at, but if this was a mistake, please let me know. I'll sort out a decent donation once we're out and about again.
No problem kendonagaski. Dad hailed from that area (Bridge Trafford) and was born just before the war, so no surprise that he had a 'spare' tucked away inside it. It's much more use to you than me, you're welcome to it.
Thanks again thelawman. Top Man more like. 🙂
Mine arrived safe and well!
The northern scotland one is beaut.
Thanks. Dementia charity to receive a bung in thanks.
I thought I'd resurrect this thread and have one more go at giving away some of the remaining 1"-to-the-mile maps that my dad accumulated in his day. Any or all of the below are available completely free to a good and appreciative home - if anyone wants some, please just PM me, and we'll sort something out.
Last time round I asked for small donations to charity of your choice, including (but not limited to) Dementia UK, your local Mountain Rescue Team or RNLI.
Here's what's left:-
