What home tinkerer things can I check / look at before either scrapping (old with other issues) or getting a professional in.
Fuses are fine, thermostat opening..

What are you doing to try and get it on ?

Had a number of cars where it won't come on under normal situations only once under heavy towing uphill does it get warm enough .

One of my cars don't even have a fan. Temp never moves from half way

Does the fan spin freely by hand? (not seized or jammed with dead leaf matter)
Locate the thermostatic switch (probably top of rad) unplug it & join the two terminals together (wiring loom end) with a bit of wire, this should produce a click from the fuse box as the fan relay switches power to the fan.

Did it come on before?

I hardly ever get mine to come on in the c-max which is the same basic engine (I think? Depends on model) just bored out and working even harder in a big lump of a car.

Pretty much takes a motorway drive, in summer, then thrash it round the junction roundabout (4x standing starts) and even then it doesn't always come on.

The engine overheated dramatically. AA man fixed a leak in the pipes, reservoir refilled, no obvious evidence of gasket damage. The engine still over heats...the fan doesn’t appear to come on before the boiling point reached.

Before throwing money at the fan..

You need to ask your self why it's reaching boiling point.

The fan is there to reduce the temperature in high ambient or during/after hard efforts at low speed. Is this when your getting it over heating or is it overheating when on idle on your drive ?

I'm sure it's a red herring for you.
