We've been down in Ardnamurchan this week, absolutely scored with the weather. I took the eldest up the highest point behind the campsite, Beinn na Seilg, which gave spectacular views over to Mull, then north to Rum, Muck and Eigg, and the Cuillins further north still.
Didn't meet a soul 😊

We have just done six days on Harris. Utterly sublime walking and meeting an average of 0 people per day on the hills. Lucked out with the weather but my camera now weighs a ton with all the photos

Superb, cracking pics Swavis! Harris is magic DavidB, I really need to get back.

Anyone use alpha synthetic stuff? Looking for a 3 season mid weight kinda insulation, not too hot for wearing both up and down. Can pair windshell or hardshell with it?.

Subscribed to the OS Maps online, wow! Have spent the morning printing and laminating maps, still getting to grips with plotting routes but first impressions very good.

Aye, I use it, route plotting is flakey at best, better if you can to import GPX from somewhere else.

bikehike used to be good for creating courses and saving as a gpx, was simple to use as well.

Walkhighlands is an excellent resource for route planning I believe?

I just use a paper map and compass, combined with a grid reference app.

Walkhighlands and walklakes are both good, taking a GPX is useful in pathless areas like my local Galloways.

It's saved me a few dead ends, bog hops and dodgy carparks.

If you do use Walkhighlands a lot then a nice little contribution via PayPal keeps them going.

It's nice to be nice

Our good run is starting to run out....after 4 weeks in a row of clear blue skies and perfect conditions, we had a fairly mixed day on the Newlands Round today. Cat Bells was amazing, we were up early and it was pretty quiet all things considered. Simply stunning views. Cloud/mist really dropped in shortly afterwards so it wasn't until we were around to Hindscarth that we got to see anything else really! Still a great day though....felt really tough actually given that it wasn't a huge amount of ascent. It was insanely slippery all day mind.....the descent off Hindscarth was lethal!

Can anyone recommend some waterpoof shell mitts to go over softshell gloves? They're probably going to be sat in the rucsac and rarely used but they'd be really handy for those days when the weather turns unexpectedly rotten.

I've a pair of the black wed'ze ski mitts from decathlon, they just fitted in the shop, but when hands are cold and damp I can't get them on (I've big hands!) They're XL, you can have them posted for a fivr to my charity cause!.

I have the extremities tuff bags, which are great GTX overmitts

Although on a hillwalking day, if it's not just a little meander, I carry a ziplock bag with emergency buff (can be a hat) and buffalo mitts. Not waterproof but enough protection and really warm.

I'm an XL glove size, XL tuff mits are a good size, buffalo mitts are an XXL

thanks @benp1

I do have proper winter gloves that I use in the snow or when skiing but I wouldn't take them with me the other 3 seasons of the year.

So, that Montane alpha jacket came from sportspursuit, fits great and looks perfect for what I'm after - not too hot for chilly 3 season hikes, paired with a windshell or hardshell.

Any recommendations for a women's equivalent? Montane prismatic looks the obvious choice?.

So is this just about premiership hillwalking...

Or are us non-league types allowed in? 😆

Top of Meikle Bin done on saturday, hoping to keep things up over the winter, mibbe start on the corbetts and munros on the spring, once I'm back in to something resembling hill walking fit! 😆 400m ascent is about my whack at the moment, but bit by bit getting there and looking to build on it each time.

Shame it was fairly cloudy, didn't really get the views of the distant hills ye can get. but still decent enough for a soggy day.

In other news, decided to buy a pair of old school hiking boots, just need to properly break them in, my north face walking gutties weren't cutting it at all! felt every stone in the way back down the forest road!

That's better than the views we had last time up Meikle bin! was supposed to be running a 12k race in Kirkintilloch last year, but the weather was stinking, so we went up MB instead, seeing as the bairn was away, and Dumyat in the afternoon, old school lunch in Corrieris.

Too many folk obsessed wi the numbers Joe, there's some awesome smaller hills, and generally not polluted with folk at weekends. Was up Meikle Millyea last saturday, only met one other person, smashing.

Check out the Donalds (summits in southern Scotland over 2000'), there's some great hills there, and no too far from you either.

Aye, will defo check those, seem a realistic choice for winter, as I don't see myself going into snow really! So will hit smaller peaks when I can, and will go for building up the distance. Got a long term aim of going for the whw in june, so need to get comfortable with distance and consecutive days!

Managed a day walking in the Galloway's yesterday, supposed to be going to Arran for some Corbetts, but had booked an overnight at Lochranza campsite, and one look at the forecast told a story, no way would we have got back today.

So, Lamachan hill, a bastard of a hill, no path, pretty much all just dougals, Heather, bogs, a total shitfest. Stunning views mind, over the awful hand and Rhinns of Kells.

Then first overnighter in the Citan, was sleeping for 9pm! 😆 Parked up at stinchar bridge, was lovely til just after 2am, then all tell broke loose weather wise. The folks who were in their tent when we arrived weren't there this morning!.

Good day all in.

Looks great today - but sadly working this morning. Tomorrow maybe.....

Random aside - where is your go to place to find new mountain routes? Mine has always been....a map! But it's always good to get ideas from somewhere sometimes from other peoples' adventures. Specifically looking for some 2 or 3 day winter routes in the Cairngorms as it looks like I'll have some time and a pass out to go play. And a new Hilleberg Soulo to test drive.

Aye, walkhighlands/walklakes. In particular the members walks, tends to be more honest/upto date with parts to be avoided, bogs etc.

If you're looking for backpacking routes, there's some really good vlogs on youtube, walk with wallace and scotland's mountains are my go to guys, some brilliant stuff.

Lovely few hours in the White Peak today....Axe Edge Moor-Burbage Edge-Errwood Reservoir-Shining Tor-Cat and Fiddle-Axe Edge Moor

Errwood and Shining Tor area was fairly busy, and cars everywhere at Cat and Fiddle (the place itself is open for takeaway and was very quiet) otherwise it was fairly quiet...certainly very relaxing. Bonus of a takeaway mulled wine at the Cat and Fiddle too! Now got a curry in the slow cooker and a bottle of Wincle Ale on the go. I love winter for hiking!!!

Stuck within the shire today, another wee visit to the summit of Shalloch on Minnoch, our local corbett.

Was the busiest I've ever seen it, 10 of us on the hill! Met a really nice fella who was trying to sell Galloway MRT to me, I may look into that....

Another nice day in the White Peak. Parked up a Wincle and did a loop over to Luds Church area....it was heaving with cars parked, but literally the quietest we've ever known that route! Very bizarre.

Bonus that Wincle Brewery was open for takeaway bottles so got a Burkes Special to enjoy later.

So after 5 years I'm finally getting a bit fed up of my Paramo Velez light. I think a new waterproof is going to make up my Christmas list!

Has anyone had Patagonia Torrentshell? Heard good reports.

Patagonia Torrentshell

We've had a few of kiddies version, one adult version, still have insulated version and a few pairs of trousers.

Uber durable fabric. Not that breathable. My biggest disappointment in the men's jacket was cut squarely and flapped around. Women's cut is perfect on size xs mrs_oab.

Imo, other brands do better cut, features and breathability at same price point. Such as Montane, Berghaus and ME.

Matt is it you that has tried basically every piece of outdoor gear ever?! I was going to tag you as I thought that it was!

Any recommendations then? Price isn't a huge issue....lighter weight as I'm fairly 'warm blooded' Something that it properly waterproof though....my Paramo is awesome, but seems to give up nowadays after an hour of heavy rain.

Nearly! A family of 5, plus 10+ staff delivering outdoor learning for the last 20 years gets you an idea of what works....

I like the Montane kit, a few find the cut a bit odd, but if it fits it's well designed and featured.

I've a Berghaus Lite Trek as work jacket that's been excellent, uses the Elite version of their own fabric. Nice long cut, good hood and proved really waterproof.

I'm keen to try the Alpkit jackets, they seem simple and well thought out.

Any chance of a link to it? Maybe we'd need a three person one as we have a dog....hoping to do some two day hikes with a wild camp next year with my girlfriend. We're getting our motorhome delivered on Friday though, so maybe wild camping in a tent and digging a "poo hole" is going to prove too hard a sell for my girlfriend 🤣

Aye so, I did a bit trekking at the weekend, on Friday, I took a stoat over to Uddingston(from Ruggie) along the Clyde walkway. This is as good a picture as it got. It's not really recommended, flat and dull, improved a wee bit last 2/3 km, but that was it.. If you are ever going to do the CWW, just start it from Uddingston and up to Lanark. It was alright from my front door, but defo don't travel for the Toon to Uddy section.

[img] [/img]

On Sunday, heading up to the other side of the CWW, much, much nicer and a decent wee walk. Not difficult for the fit among us, but I'm struggling now! 22km over 2 days with a day break in between might not seem a lot, but it's destroyed me... Well I was feeling alright... But I went a walk down to the shops on Tuesday and my calf muscle pops! Aaaarghhh!!!! I didn't think I'd get home, but hobble home I did! So laid up a bit now(I was out around the block today but very slowly). I'll take it easy over the weekend, and should be back into it next week. I'm a long way from my WHW ambition, but I'll get there! Soreness is a positive thing eh, means I'm working!

Anyhow, not the best pictures, but that end of the Clyde walkway was impressive, the Clyde in spate up there is a magnificent thing!

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

I'll be exploring South Lanarkshire a bit more, given the restrictions. So will post up what it has to offer when i'm back!

Rewinding the conversation a bit to info sources - I find Walkhighlands a bit cluttered now and taking longer to search. Steven Fallon's website is what i tend to default to now, particularly as he also lists longer days with walking and running estimated times.

Right, hopefully these photos work....

Beinn Eighe in October...
Torridon was amazing, and luckily got a good day up Beinn Eighe. Couple of days later we went up Slioch and couldn't see a thing.

Schiehallion few weeks ago.

Glenshee last weekend.

We're pretty lucky to be living in Perth and Kinross council area, got great access to some beautiful places and a good selection of hills.

Not really a munro bagger, been walking for years at home and abroad, but started my attempt on the munros this year. Really enjoying it as it kind of forcing us to get out and not waste our weekends.

Great pics, Torriden is a very special place for me. As a Luddite ex-punky couch potato teen in the late 80s (Yorkshire), Coffee table book pics of Liathach in winter was my inspiration to become a winter walker, climber, alpine mountaineer. Did horns and Liathach in winter a few times over the years, but our only Beinn Eighe venture was tent got destroyed and some kit blown away in a storm in the corries. I remember Andy's new Karrimat disappeared up the mountain followed shortly by our trangia stove cartwheeling into the waters, we beat a hasty retreat after retrieving the stove and tent, karrimat (and Beinn Eighe) never to be seen again. Great days.

One absolute positive of 2020 is the amount of folks taking to the local hills. This is south Ayrshires only Corbett, Shalloch on Minnoch, and last winter there wasn't a path.

Cold day up there yesterday, but still a lovely walk.

Despite a late start, managed to get up Meall Corranaich and Meall a Choire Leith on Saturday. Was a lovely day above the fog anyway. Was lucky enough to get my first brocken spectre!!!
