Yeah, that's it.

The reason it's there is because PC keyboards were based on IBM mainframe terminal keyboards, and the negation symbol was used in some ancient mainframe programming language or other. PL/1? Maybe.

Oooh, hacky-yet-elegant, I like it...

I know it as the 'pipe' key. Very useful when used with Ctrl in excel for showing formulas that get hidden...

Confusing, as allthepies says "|" is pipe too, comes from *nix/bash I think. I use Excel all the time and I've never called "¬" 'pipe'.

Also, surrealist coder joke: "|" ceci n'est pas un pipe.

As above, a maths/logic thing. But I've not used it since doing that course at uni, quite some time ago.

That symbol is not on all keyboards. Pretty sure it is on my home PCs (maybe not chromebook or mac... would need to check), but it certainly is not on this work keyboard. A least it is not labelled on a key but might be available via some weird windoze key combo somewhere.

I've always called | a pipe. Have seen the broken vertical also, but again, that one is not on this keyboard.

On this PC, the key that usually has the not symbol, only has the ~ and the backwards ' that stuffs up all the formatting on this forum.

The backward apostrophe thing doesn't stuff up the formatting really, it's just a useful way of formatting inline code or other pre-formatted text.

Incidentally Windows Character Map says that ¬ is called the "Not Sign"

If your keyboard doesn't have it you can get it by holding Alt and typing 0172 on your numeric keypad.

(On this Logitech keyboard it is on the top row to the left of the numbers. The broken vertical pipe ¦ is there too)

Not symbol is very important in mathematics - my memory is a bit hazy (getting old) but I recall back in the day ('late 70's and early '80's) we used to write it as -! on the computer keyboard so my guess is they created a single character to match

Think this is some kind of odd "English International" keyboard? Certainly not UK, and not sure it's US either (might be). Not sure it's a brand thing, but more of a layout thing? (edit: this is an HP keyboard, and just checked the HP laptop, and it's the same)

Odd key combos vary. I'd probably hit AltGr and something to see those on my home PC, but not here. And there's no way I'd remember any of those ALT+xxx code numbers.

ah... bit of goggling... it's a one of them:

so ¬ = altgr+\ and ¦ = altgr+shift+\

but ¦¬«» etc are not labelled on the keys (€ is the only AltGr+ thing labelled)
