the more, er, splash through there was from the rear tyre, which over a long ride can make things worse that not having a cutout at all. So the clever Ergon engineers developed a thin rubber cutout ‘plug’ that sealed the base of it back up, keeping bums dry in the worse of weathers.

The lengths some will go to to not use guards : )
