Apparently they feel as hot as larvae if you touch them.

After feeling bitten all over I accused the place I was staying at in Spain as having bed bugs - the reality was it was these critters.

Derbyshire is quite a big place, are we meant to know where they’ve been found?

I've not noticed anything out of the ordinary in terms of strange creatures around there

Back in the mists of time, about 2006, I did a 24 hour MTB race in Coin, Spain, with Torq and some of their team riders. We were warned about the caterpillars so avoided them while riding but unfortunately 22 hours of rain during the race and lots of riders turned the surface into a paste of wet mud and mushed caterpillars, which was sprayed all over our legs while riding.

I can confirm that they lose none of their potency in this state.

Side fact - the course went through the abandoned set of the unloved soap, Eldorado.
