Whilst I get where you're coming from I'm - personally) happy to accept a branding sponsorship thing isn't really an ad of the sort I expect to be able to turn off.
Just my opinion mind. (maybe it's more intrusive on other platforms too, seems fairly innocuous on android/chrome unless I'm worried about being brain washed.
But advertising doesn't work on me anyway 😉)
Partnerships like this are really important to us as they help us maintain and develop the site but we are looking forward to much more than just a financial relationship with Chain Reaction.
are there going to be synergies in software development?
are there going to be synergies in software development?
Ooh. Feel the burn!!
I have no problem with the new partnership whatsoever. I’ll leave the problem creating and arguing to others who I’m sure will be along shortly!

Lolz, I guess the big knobs at CRC tried searching the forum for feedback, gave up and
That’s why they’ve created a feedback survey specifically to get your thoughts on what is important to you when it comes to their services

Cheap gear, obviously - what else?

To be serious for a moment there have been a few threads, one especially comes to mind, regarding the new CRC site that rendered the filters hopeless. That situation has improved but it originally lacked some basic stuff like filtering out what wasn’t in stock or what wheel size you wanted for tyres, or disc sizes etc. Of course it may have been deliberate to make customers trawl through more product but it certainly created some irritation. There were also comments about the loss of order histories, order confirmations that didn’t confirm details like size and/or colour ordered.
That's good, I have a feeling I'll be ordering some bits and bobs soon for the weather turning wet...
Did the Isuzu pickup truck do a U-turn?
Well I get 15% off at Cotswold with my BMC card. Can I expect 15% off all orders from CRC with my ST membership then?
I guess it's easy to be cynical, but CRC for all it's faults, and it clearly has them, remains perhaps the best known on line retailer in the UK, and it's in our interests that it responds to constructive criticism (that at least, they've asked for)
Good opportunity to be heard as a consumer at least.
Sounds like good news to me. Is this meaning a reduction in the ads for Free members so it becomes more useable (and maybe get more converted to Paid members)? Assuming the partnership helps reduce costs.

The only reason I keep up my membership is because the forum is virtually unusable as a free member.
Sounds promising.
The image on the main forum when you click on it wont load / take you to where its supposed to.....
Cheap gear thats in stock, obviously – what else?
FTFY

feels like that there already are
Roof Bar thread has not only been closed but deleted too - it was hardly an advert! Mods must have got out of bed the wrong side this morning!

That’s ridiculous if that’s the case.
How long until you’re not allowed to buy and sell anything on here or not allowed to mention CRC having a crap website?
If you’re paying for an ad free experience but still getting ads, you may as well be a free user and use some of the unmentionable software.

Aye, I'm sure a quick search of the forum would find the information instantly 😎
It worked OK for me today looking for a wheel
157x12 TICK
27.5 TICK
Shimano hub TICK
Done... ordered.

Why didn’t you use the classifieds?
Wasn't me who posted - I just read it as I had some roofbars sat in the shed.
Found it really odd it was closed and deleted.
Wiggle killed CRC. Website is still useless with crap filters.
That said I think this is a good thing for STW, and those moaning about ads really need to get a grip. Just scroll down and it goes away, you can literally only see it at the top of the page. Infact once you click into a thread it goes away as well!!
That is a bit pathetic about the roof rack thread though, is it because someone mentioned ebay?
Yes it works so well. so, so well.
It's Select * from products where productCategory = 'Tyres' AND wheelSize = '27.5' AND inStock = 'True'
It's not exactly rocket science.

So, 2 of the worst search functions and user interfaces on the entire internet combine forces. I can hardly wait to see what unfolds.

So it seems another post deleted

This 😀
Nice one! Good to get a bit of sponsorship. All the TV programmes seem to these days!
There are a lot of people whinging when what this news actually means is STW gets to continue on living. Sure it’s a big CRC advert at the top of the page, but I’m pretty sure people on here already know if they’re going to shop with a big online shop of stick to smaller shops so what’s the problem?
I get the complaints about things like Isuzu and advertorials telling us the cure to dropper post problems is One Up, but this just seems like whinging for the sake of whinging.
tom KP
I don't mind the sponsorship - but the advert is ruddy huge on my iMac. Needs to be half the depth.
And there is advert creep in the sidebar >>>>
...Booking . com anyone! 🙂
whinging for the sake of whinging.
Stw own vortex of destruction..
Stw have got some good sponsorship. Well done.
BE GONE WICKED SEDUCTRESS!!
AND TAKE THY EVIL TEMPTATIONS WITH THEE!!!
This is a place of simple purity and wholesome goodness.
So it seems another post deleted
More than one...
It's the principle of it. Lots of us jumped in with subscriptions because we get to both support STW and browse without ads, but the they're coming back, and the subscriptions are sold as promising an "ad-free website".
On top of that daring to mention that it's a problem and pointing out that subscribers are forced to use a third party solution to deal with it results in a snotty message from the moderator team quoting the terms and conditions. Sorry guys, but if you want to get grumpy and dive into the legal mumbo-jumbo, I'm pretty sure you can't advertise something and then offer a materially different product.
>> eg booking.com, flight finder off to the right there.
I don’t think this is winding people up enough. STW Towers should take a look at Pinkbike, they’ve embedded their menu in the middle of a banner ad and I click that damn advert on a regular basis when I really wanted the ‘News’ button. Could work well here too.
I will sit back and wait for the ‘likes’ from my fellow forumites 😀
I don't have an issue with sponsorship if it keeps the STW_staff team earning a living and the forum and magazine alive.

Or maybe unlike you they're not blinkered
I put my roof bars on here, they should have gone on the classifieds. I just wanted to see if anybody could use them before they went to the tip.
Sorry mods
It’s worked! I’ve been on the Chain Reaction website, browsing. Is there a way of going directly from here? I tried clicking the logo but no luck!
Or maybe mods understand the rules.
My main objection was that the email I got from the moderator team was just curt and rude.
Probably just being time efficient. Keep up the hard work mods. And thank you.

We can’t all be au fait with sub-paragraph “c” of section 14.2.77 of chapter 4 of the forum rules.
Does 2 broken websites make 1 working one?
I searched on CRC for a size L jumper and got the Picolax thread instead
It would be nice if the sponsorship got as far as the members discount page.
This inspired me to go to chainreaction when considering a new stem. Unfortunately I found I couldn’t filter by stem length so I gave up and left…

Although I wanted to point out that neither of the items pictured are either a torque or a torx wrench, it did remind me I need a new chain whip that works on 12 speed. Very cunning, CRC 😉
can we ask the 5-star phone in question?
Nice one! Good to get a bit of sponsorship. All the TV programmes seem to these days!
Which, you could argue, is just a cunning/cynical way of getting round the advertising minutage restrictions. 😉

That parking is restricted to reverse parking only on a Wednesday afternoon, sir?
I'm not quite sure of the relevance of that her, sir.
Searchbar is powered by google also.
We all moaned when the begging cup went out, if this is a way of keeping the forum going without begging then great. (& same for Izuzu advert too afaic)
All I can see is a Chain Reaction banner, not getting anything else?
Aside from the thoughts on web sites, it's good news that STW has attracted a no doubt significant player in the cycling world, with hopefully an equally significant funding pot.
I don't mind the odd advert and I don't chase the lowest price on anything - race to the gutter anyone - but, if the forum becomes a CRC forum as has been indicated slightly by threads being deleted, and goes down the avenue of 'We can't promote any shops other than CRC/Wiggle' etc, it will be disappointing and I'll pack my bags.
For me the annoying thing is the large ad videos that pop up inline with the forum posts.
I rarely read any of the members only content so it makes me really question what I am paying the membership fee for when I am having to navigate over ads.
Well my CRC wheel arrived, it's correct... it was easy to find on the site and it's all good.
Welcome to our great Overlords.
For me the annoying thing is the large ad videos that pop up inline with the forum posts.
If you are a paying member then there is an option to disable those videos in the preferences section of your account info. They do still seem to sometimes appear if you come into a post via a Google link but the rest of the time they are gone
as has been indicated slightly by threads being deleted
I'm pretty confident in saying that's coincidence not conspiracy. The various threads were all things which would and have historically been removed. Sometimes it's fine line between an ad and a PSA and sometimes the mods make a call I'd disagree with but none of the threads I saw were clearly "normal" forum content deleted for promoting [redacted 😉].
It looks suspicious because "I've got free roof bars pm me" got deleted about the same time as the crc banner arrived. It would have been deleted or closed a week ago though and no one would have batted an eyelid at that.
Something about incompetence and malice, and if you can't decide which it might be, use the search bar up there to find previous threads on the subject.
[Mod - to clarify, starting a for sale or wanted post in the main forum (stealth or otherwise, no matter how generous the offer) has never been allowed. If you see one, report it and we’ll remove it & ask the poster to place an ad in the classifieds. Thanks]
Which, you could argue, is just a cunning/cynical way of getting round the advertising minutage restrictions
Not very cunning tbh. I'm about as likely to buy a Volvo cos they sponsor True Detective or a bottle of Coors cos I like Channel4 comedy as I am to only shop at CRC for my bike kit.
