Zwift Racing, slight complexity on Cat selection

My lad races with a junior account related to my account. It's his own account but is 'free' as he's a junior.

However he very rarely rides and very rarely races, so some races now that use auto-cat won't let him race at all.... some give him only an A as an option.

He's at best a poor C but arguably too strong in short races as a D... lol.

So for today i've adjusted my weight at zwift.com to 50kg (which is his actual weight) and height down too... So he'll race as me... Which i'm more than happy with, however may throw some frowns at Zwiftpower ? But i'll deal with that anyway if needed.

So, questions.
1. Do i need to change anything on zwiftpower.com as i can't see any weight in there ?
2. How do i get him into a proper Cat on his own account ?

Does he have a Zwiftpower account?
I think what happens with the auto-cat thing is you need to have a certain amount of races under your belt within a certain time frame to be correctly categorised.

If you don't, it will only let you race in A races until you have a few races they can use to categorise you.
Seems a bit stupid as I imagine it would put people off bothering in the first place. But I think if he does a few A races, it will then start allowing him to enter in the correct category.

do more races. ones where everyone goes together rather than ones where the categories start at 1 minute intervals. He'll get the same experience regardless of what letter is next to his name.

Once you've sorted the categories as a lightweight he'll probably do better in climbing races.

He needs to do races on his own account to build up a history. Still plenty that don't use auto cat.

No need to update weight in zp. It takes the weight as set in zwift for your last event.

I had forgot about the raw power limits, made to help out the lightweights who often get blown out on the flat.

A: 4w/kg and 250w FTP
B: 3.2w/kg and 200w FTP
C: 2.5w/kg and 150w FTP

For example (as you seem to think he is C/D borderline)

a 125W FTP at 50kg should put him into C. But is 25W short of the minimum power, so he would continue to be a D - and could do so with an FTP of 149W (or 3W/kg)

If you let your lad use your account, you will be stuck in whatever Category Enforcement level he is assigned to for the next 60 days after the race is processed by zwifthq. CE is based on a single effort.

Your lad needs to do a decent effort in any zwift mode (not just a race), for something like 5mins+. Until then, he is limited to CE pen A until that race is processed.

Processing takes place around 1400-1500 bst each day.

https://intervals.icu/ has a 2 parameter power option over the last 60 days, limit it to indoor only, if you only used Zwift on turbo that will give you a Critical Power W/Kg value that should give a good indication of your Zwift CE pen assignment.

OK, cheers gang....

I guess for today we'll do this race as him/me and then after the race we'll find some stuff he can do as him to get him a dedicated Cat.

I’d go for whatever one the cats protection league has had in for the longest

@weeksy if he races as you, it might mess up your own category enforcement. I think the low weight might get taken into account.

I asked this on the zwift forums yesterday (I've been off the bike for ages...) and was told any activity, not necessarily a race, over 2km will be enough to get category enforcement races opened up.

I didn't test that - but a single 35 min ride in the watch the femmes event (not the classics races of the same name) was definitely enough.

Thanks all. We did a 9-10 min ride before the race but it never updated in time so he just raced as me. He then raced as me, then jumped on for another 5-6 mins.

He can now enter 3R races as himself. For info, his race was 7mins and he averaged 185w.... It's tough for him as he's up at 3.6w/kg for the race, but loses ground to people averaging way less due to how Zwift works all it's speeds out. So i think he'll either be a good D or a rubbish C at the moment.

Serves you right, time to pause that membership for 60+ days and create an alt account. 😉

lol guilty as charged... i can race an Evo this afternoon as a C and then i'll do another ride and see if it then lets me back in C. I'm not too worried either way in honesty but it is slightly amusing.

You might well find that after mysteriously gaining 30Kg+ overnight and doing any Zwift activity, your CE will revert to whatever it was before your lad raced on your account yesterday, once this activity is processed tomorrow afternoon.
