So I've recently got a smart trainer, and I have a few years old Windows 10 laptop.
When I use Rouvy AR on the laptop, it quickly pairs directly with my trainer and when I ride the trainer provides more resistance uphill, less downhill, just as I expected it to.
Zwift on the laptop won't pair directly with the trainer. It pairs OK using the Zwift Companion App on my Android phone, but when I ride the resistance seems to stay basically the same when the gradient changes. Speed goes down on the uphills and up on the downhills, but I never need to change gear because I don't feel any change in resistance. I'm not in workout/ERG mode.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or is that just not how Zwift works? I didn't calibrate the trainer or anything, just updated the firmware, but the fact that Rouvy works fine makes me think that's not the problem.
Is it worth picking up an Ant+ dongle for the laptop? I thought the ZCA was supposed to be preferable to ANT+?
Is it an elite turbo?
Quite a few problems with elite turbos and resistance etc on zwift if you do a bit of googling, seems to be with dropping out and not reconnecting properly.
Yeah, it's an Elite Zumo
I'd try ANT+ if it's not working well with BT - best option is a dongle at the end of a long extension lead, so it sits close to the turbo. I use it in preference to BT with a Kickr. Also, if you get different options on pairing, look for the FEC one which is the protocol that allows Zwift to control resistance.
Those are both generic solutions. Don't know about Elite stuff though.
I'd be trying a dongle on a nice long extension lead, right next to the turbo
If it pairs, be sure to set the trainer to the FE-C one - porbably two will appear
I've got a Wahoo but yeah, a cheap ant+ dongle on an extension lead near to the trainer is almost always a good idea.
As far as i could work out from my looking into it (this and the flaky erg mode were the reasons i went for a kickr) it seems to be the turbo drops connection and then automatically reconnects to the wrong mode like scaredypants mentions above. If you’re using different software etc maybe its all getting confused, try turning everything off and restarting. link the trainer to ZC then turn the laptop on and load zwift.
Theres also reports of the zumo not working properly with the android version of zp, have you got an ios device you could try?
What hardware does the rouvy use to connect with?
What version of BT are you using? I had this problem with Zwift not picking up my Kickr from my laptop, Found my BT dongle was version 2 but Zwift requires v4.
I have had similar but using bluetooth when connecting there is two options sometimes one says taxc trainer the other taxc something else if you select the one that doesnt say trainer you get constant resistance..
I had that, and it was set to ferociously hard resistance. I went I to the elite app, tweaked the circumfrence setting slightly then ran a BT calibration in zwift and it seemed to fix it. It's a bit of a ball ache and took me a while of fiddling to get it sorted.
I'd have taken mine back but there are none to be had in the country so I persevered.

Rouvy works fine with the laptop's built-in Bluetooth direct to the trainer.
Zwift can't even see the trainer using the laptop Bluetooh (without the Companion App) . But it is on the list that Windows can see?

So this morning Zwift could connect directly through the laptop, and resistance worked OK. I'm not sure what I was doing differently though. Zwift update perhaps?
