On a big ride at the weekend my rear mech started playing up. I run a Zee with an 11-36 cassette. When I move from the larger cogs down the cassette the cage locks forwards and won't hold tension. The chain flaps around and skips.

The mech is around three years old. Is it salvageable and if so how?

Thanks

No real help but I've had an XT mech do the same (36t x 11-36).

I do run the chain as short as possible, nearly maxing out the mech under full compression at the top of the cassette so put it down to that. Not a clutch issue but feels like the spring is either binding or snagging as once back in place the mech works as it should.

Will investigate and report back when I get chance.

I do run the chain very short- the sensation is similar to when on old non-shadow mechs you ripped past the little metal stop on the knuckle where they bolted to the frame.

Bumped into a bloke from Wheelspin cycles today on Cut Gate and he's never seen it before and the verdict is that it's goosed.

Sounds similar to an issue I had with an slx mech. Stripped it down and the spring had jumped somehow. Reset it and was good to go again. Worth taking it apart for a nosey.

Sounds like the clutch has given up, they get to the point where you can't adjust the tension in the clutch to the right point at all... best you can do with it now is loosen the clutch and use it as a regular non-clutch mech.

Probably full of crap, had same issue with mine, just removed cover and clean out with wd40 or a like, work cage forward backwards, there's a rubber seal behind cover make sure this goes back correctly,

I had a similar thing with an XT mech.
Stripped it down and the pivot bolt that holds the cage on/ goes through the center of the clutch was bone dry.
Remove the cage and grease that pivot.

As above, if it's anything like mine it's deffo not a problem with the clutch.

Still not had chance to investigate further...
