Will it work or do I need a rad cage type thingy ?
On a HT, with the B Tension screw wound all the way in, yes... Just...
On a FS, don't even go there unless the main pivot is around the BB. Same goes for a 42T expander ring.
Zee, 40T and longer B-screw works brill on my Cube FS.

No idea whether mine is or not - 2011 Stereo?
<hijack> Got a brand new 11-36 zee mech available if you want it £30 posted?
It for the fs which is 1x10 alreay but I've got a week riding in north Wales coming up and might need the extra help by the end of the week .
Or stick a secret granny ring on?
My Zee + 40t needed a RADr cage & longer b screw to work perfectly.
bruneep - thanks for the offer .
Secret granny not an option , single ring only .
My transition scout has a zee mech (not short obviously) and i've a hope t-rex 40t. Shifts onto it fine, still turns left on the b screw.
Zee FR on a Banshee Spitfire works fine - 11-40t SLX cassette and T-rex.
Only drawback is that that's in the neutral position. If in the slack position with the flipchips, there is not enough chain and the mech restricts travel when in 40t, add a link and it's too slack in 11t.
Should be OK with a RadR but really waiting for 11spd XT later in the year.
Apologies for exposure...
As mbpy says, generally if you've got a full sus and an expander ring a Zee mech is a baaaaad idea, as it can't cope with the chain growth.
You'll think its fine, until one day you hit a drop or jump in the expander ring, and BOOOOOM!, your mech explodes.
The thing to do, is fit it and then cycle it through the travel. TBH even if you buy a medium cage mech, a rad/radr cage will still improve the setup so maybe just buying and trying is a decent plan- the worst case scenario isn't so bad.
Personally I'd be putting a rad cage on it, it's just better performing- less temperamental, less picky about mud, cable stretch, wear and tear all that. You can get excellent function with a standard mech provided you put the time in but you don't get the margin for error that you expect with OE, the radcage gives that back. Mountain bikes don't suit exacting setup, generally.

Had a customer bring back a Zee mech he'd bought off me the week before, sheared in half, wanting his money back.
I asked what happened... Turns out that of course, it was fitted onto an 11-36 cassette with a 40T Hope T-Rex, on a Yeti SB66. He described how he'd measured the chain length correctly when the suspension as fully extended.
Of course he then went and rode it, and bottomed the suspension out with it in the 40T cog.
Don't even bother, it's an expensive mistake to make! Especially when you can buy an SLX medium cage mech for about the same price, and that will work fine whatever you put it on...
Our guide bike are set with XT 11-36 plus OneUp 42T, direct mount Zee mech with Radr cage, the b-tension screw is 2/3rd the way in.
Radr is an excellent piece of kit.

This - Zee is just a dinky SLX essentially, so if you want to run wide range, just get SLX. You'll not know the difference other than it won't explode.

I had a Zee and 11-36 on my Spitfire and after a few months of chain wear and mech use it was loose in the smallest sprocket when set with enough slack for full travel in the largest sprocket. Started getting worrying rubbing on bits of the mech. SLX medium cage works great.
Don't ride off any drops in your biggest sprockets with that chain length!
Thanks all , slx medium cage it is then . Crc have the absolute black 40t on offer as well .

Always thought of Zee as "Downhill Deore", think SLX is a step up. Certainly the case with the cranks.
Depends on the component. Cranks are Deore level, shifter and mech is SLX, and the brakes are a kind of Deore/Saint hybrid.Always thought of Zee as "Downhill Deore", think SLX is a step up. Certainly the case with the cranks.
Zee shifter is a bulky lump, SLX is a lot neater and nicer. SLX mech is more durable too, aside from the issues above.

Can't imagine why I'd be in the 40T cog when in a position to bottom out my suspension - running 30T front and 40T it's so low a gear I can only bear to be in it on super steep stuff.

My thoughts as well, how on earth do you bottom out suspension going so slow?
Well suppose you could roll slowly off a cliff.
