So, was all set for swapping the gears on my sons Orbea MX24 Team this afternoon to a 10 speed setup but ran into a problem. I fitted an XT 11-36 cassette and was going to use the Zee clutch mech I had spare but after setting the chain to what should have been the correct length (biggest cog plus 2 links) the mech just couldn't take up the slack.
Am I doing something wrong? I'm sure it should work with a 32t chainring and 11-36 cassette or do I need a medium cage mech like what was originally fitted?
Which version of the mech do you have?
Pretty sure it's the wide ratio as I ran it on my CX bike with the same cassette without a problem for months.
I've got a wide ratio zee mech 11-36 cassette and 32t n/w on my HT, so you're right it should work.
No help really, sorry!!
added a 11-36 and a zee last week to a mate's bike, worked perfectly, have you fitted it to the hanger correctly?
Mine worked but i add 4 links for 1x
Got the same setup on a bike with no issues. Post a pic of the mech when you have it on the 36 (with clutch on), your chain maybe too long.
Yup, shifted through the gears perfectly but in bottom gear the chain was just really saggy. Could it be related to the fact it's a 24" and has short chainstays maybe?
Will have another go tomorrow or Monday if I get chance
I find that I have to run the short cage Zee with an 11-36 cassette and a 30 or 32 chain ring with more B tension than is ideal to put just enough tension into the chain when in the smallest ring. Which means that the mech is almost at the limit if the suspension hits full compression when in 1st gear. But as that's a pretty unlikely combination (1st gear and a drop big enough to bottom out the suspension) I live with it. It's a compromise I'm happy to live with to keep the short cage and loose less rear mechs on the rocks!
Running a zee with 11-40 on a hardtail here. No issues. Very dependent on chain length though
Is it sat on the b tab properly?
I would also check the clutch is working properly. My XT mech recently had a siezed clutch which meant the cage wouldn't take up all the tension resulting in a slack chain. A quick clean and lube sorted it.
