YT Izzo or Transition Spur?

Read loads of reviews.

This is to replace a Bird Zero 29 which is 31lbs, so keen to get sub 30lb which should be achievable. It won't be 100% wheels on the ground but do crave a bit of pep to the bike and hoping either will be a good compliment to the 160 f+r Bird I run.

Price wise looking at the Spur Deore, £3900 approx. Probably shift the forks and run my Pikes instead so maybe £3500 after this change. Wheels would be changed so maybe another £100 back or so. Deore groupset which I would run and upgrade over time.

Izzo Core 2 so alloy rear/carbon front. £2500, again probably run the Pikes but I did like my 36 Rythms so might try the 34's. Wheels would go again so maybe £200 back. NX groupset which I would most likely swap for Shimano from the word go.

The Core 3 gets full carbon, perfomance elite fork and shocks and GX drive- for me I don't think thats great value for an additional £1.3k

Money wise the Izzo seems better value (aware the Spur frame only is £3.6 rrp so not expecting that to compete the same price point. Heart says Spur but £1K+ is noticeable.

Size wise it would be large either way, so 472 reach on the Izzo and 480 on the Spur. Izzo is steeper by a degree seatangle wise and 450 vs 460 seatube so arguably better in that regard also.

"Big" bike is 486 reach and comin from a 475 reach bike previously so on paper wouldn't want to go smaller than 472 reach.

Any feedback welcomed. It would be great to look at either if anyone has one locally (I'm Glasgow based) as demos seem non-existent up here.

They'll both do a good job for what you're after, so go for the one you like the look off and then work out the setup best for you.

Personally, as many do, i prefer Transition, partially due to being shop bought and supported, partially due to bike tartitis.

There is no competition, looks alone the Spur wins for me. It was lovely when it came out and still looks great.

Its a chunk of money mind- but far more exciting than a new bathroom right 😉

Get it, otherwise you'll always be sizing up the YT to the bike you never got, i haven't heard a bad word about the Spur, it's lovely, Transition are a good brand, with a decent network around the country for support.

Been very impressed with my sworks frame, sub 30lbs with no carbon and xc/trail wheels and tyres.

I will do some reading on the Specialized. Just over 31lbs in S4 it seems but that can be dropped I imagine..

Gut says I'd rather stay shorter travel but it's only 10mm on the front which isn't a deal breaker if it's still "sprightly”

For me, Transition all the way. They are so bloody good at warranty issues that it's worth the extra cash - life time warranty if anything goes wrong, I had to replace one frame due to failure and it was sorted out in just a few weeks at a time when bike availability was super limited.

Can you actually buy a Spur - they had sold out a while back.

Maybe a Cotic Flaremax?

The weight maybe a factor but I reckon mine is 13kg or so and could go lighter with some more sprightly wheels.

I had my reservations and was looking at something carbon and lighter.

Now I have ridden it it's quite a different animal!

It wants to pop and jump of everything and is quite lively.

Certainly feels lighter than it is!

Mine is downcountry style with Sids and a bit of XC kit on it.

Thanks,

Max

The Stage Evo appeals but no bottle cage is a deal breaker currently, small detail I know.

Will look at the Cotic but not wanting to go mental on carbon parts to offset a heavier frame if it's heavier to start with.

I've got a gen4 flaremax and even with carbon wheels, XTR cranks/cassette, carbon bars, fox 34 it's not light! Large frame well over 4kg. But I agree it feels lighter and lively than you'd expect. Awesome bike but probably doesn't fit your brief!

If you're looking to upgrade to a GX drivetrain..i'll be having a brand new one I'll be tking off my epic evo (when it arrives) if that's of interest?
GX mech, chain, and cassette, X1 crank..

Will think about the ££

I went through the same a couple of months ago and got the Deore spec’d Spur (and upgraded the wheels). Absolutely fallen in love with it. Very capable up and down. In fact I might take it out for a spin shortly. You are very unlikely to regret it.

I fancied a Spur or Izzo. While deliberating noticed a heavily discounted Rocky mountain element so got that instead.

Liking it very much so far, and there is room for TWO bottle cages!

I did look at the RM but can only find alloy ones in the UK currently. Again it would be a large..

I see you've ruled out the Stage Evo, shame about that 😀

Personally I like the look of both your contenders, and I'd be keeping my eye out for a nice secondhand Izzo (as they're bound to be cheaper).

Spur all the way. Simply a phenomenal do it all bike with magic geo numbers for a pedally xc/trail bike. Looks awesome and great warranty support to back you up. Just make sure to get the newest version with Fox suspension as the SID stuff still has a lot of reliability issues.

SH Izzos are still around 2.5k on Pinkbike etc and that's mostly 2021 bikes. Not paying that for no warranty..

I was looking at both over winter and went for the Spur. Partly due to the shorter seat tube on the Spur. It's a lovely bike that was well worth waiting for. Built up with Fox 34 SC Factory, XX1 and GX groupset, Roval Control wheels. It's very light for a 120mm full sus.

A deal breaker for me too. Some under top tube mounts seem to have appeared in some images on the orange website. Not sure if this is a running change and may only allow a bottle on larger frames and assuming no piggy back shock.

Only on STW can you ask an opinion about two choices and end up with 23 different ones 😂

Anyway, i'd avoid Orange like the plague, not only through sheer single pivoted ugliness, but having a bike called Orange in Glasgow would be a no go for me, if the OP is of course from the blue side, then maybe it'll suit them 😋

I had a quick peek at sold prices on eBay and I'd hope to pick one up closer to £1.5k.

But I'm delighted with my stage Evo so I don't need to 😄

YT's warranty is a joke, I found a crack on the underside of the downtube after removing the plastic frame guard (which wasn't damaged in any way) on a 5 month old Jeffsy pro race a few years ago, sent it back to Germany and was basically told tuff s**t, we'll sell you a new front triangle for €1200 but no way is it covered on warranty. I've no idea how or when the crack appeared as Ifound it when washing the bike (no significant crashes or impacts) but I wouldn't give YT another penny. I ended up getting the crack repaired for around £300

You already know the answer but for what it's worth you would never get an Izzo to Spur weight. Spurs can be easily built to 26-28lb with fairly normal kit 👍 Gotta go light, put the country in downcountry

I got an Izzo uncaged 7 when they were on offer. Love it. Very light, very fast, very yellow. It does very well on the descents for its 120mm travel, and flies up the climbs (too a point as I’m no whippet!). Wanted a spur but don’t regret getting the Izzo, especially with the spec on it. Just hope it doesn’t develop a crack based on the story above. Almost Giant-like levels of crap warranty there!

I can't offer a comparison as I haven't ridden both bikes. I've just bought a Spur though and after the first ride on it I can say it's hell of a bike-fast,light and agile. Very easy to lift the front end and have fun .I came in from the ride and put my new freshly built enduro bike up for sale straight away ......

As @balfa said above, don't rule it out just yet, under top tube mounts have appeared on the images for 2023 bikes

Go for the Spur, you wont regret it, you will regret not getting one 😉

Had mine since April, great bike, handles brilliantly, I went for the FOX GX spec then made some upgrades

GX AXS rear mech and shifter

Hope E4's (had them lying around from an old bike)

DT Swiss EX1501 wheelset (240's hubs, again left over from a previous bike)

FOX Transfer dropper (had 2 faulty One up droppers)

Same kind of money as the Spur The Tallboy needs a standing mention much better build quality than the YT infact the Spur would be hands down. But same kind of bike and I have to say for most of the UK its ideal
