Hi

I’ve mananaged to round the main pivot bolt (Part 21) on my 2016 Capra al. The bolt on the opposite side can still be removed, does anyone know if I can tap the rounded bolt out from the opposite side while it’s still attached to the main pivot axle? (Part 23) I don’t want to start hammering on it and break something else if it’s not possible.

Cheers

James

From the drawing it looks like you have to remove the axle (23) to get the bearings out any way.

How rounded out is it?

An old trick is to put some grease and some grinding paste into the bolt, then tap the bolt as you apply rotational force.

You could also try some denim and then tapping the bit into the bolt, then as above, rotation and impact.

Unless you have a variable torque electric impact driver?

Looks like you can OP. Can you get a beefy Allen key down the pivot axle so it rests against the rounded bolt on the inside? That way you’re only risking damaging a bolt that’s already damaged

On my Jeffsy there’s only one bolt anyway ie they moved to an integrated axle/bolt for one side. So I remove the bolt on the non drive side and tap the axle through as you’re planning to do.

Yeah I’m pretty sure you do. I just wanted to check if the axle should slide out with one of the bolts fully torqued to it? I’ve given it a shove but it’s not moving easily. Don’t want to wreck another part wacking it with a mallet

Cheers

James

Or you could be a bit more brutal like Wildfire suggests!

Although I find 200nm impact drivers a bit too unsubtle for bike components...

You could also try tapping a suitable large torx into the rounded hex slot, if you have a big enough torx key

Thanks for your replies, my last post was out of sync with your postS so probably doesn’t make much sense.
It was a hex key originally and too round I think to get any purchase maybe a flat head screwdriver wound hammer in? But I’m going to try pushing out from the other side where the Allen key.
Just got to try and get a new part from YT now! With them not posting to the UK I think I’m going to have to get it sent to a relative in France

@jpacey try

or
https://www.halfords.com/tools/hand-tools/automotive-tools/laser-6-piece-screw-extractor-set-694448.html

MTB friend told me about the latter and has bailed me out a few times. Not used the former but don't see why it would not work.

So long as you can get get the axle back in again and tighten it up from one side do you even need a replacement?

I don't think they should be hex bolts-on my old Capra they were all Torx style of various sizes-perhaps thats the problem/or cause of - maybe the right size torx key(big t30 I think) will still bite and undo it unless it is too far gone now. From memory I think you can indeed just tap it/push it out .
Another bolt to be wary of is the horst link one-undo it tighten it from the Torx head as the little silver allen bolt will just round off if you try to use that for anything other than a holder to tighten from the other side.

You are right gravesend it’s a t30 torx not hex but too rounded to grip

RicB- hopefully not if I can get the axle in/out anyway but the centre of the bolt is now cracked a little where I’ve tried to hammer the torx key in to get it to grip (idiot I know) so I think a new one will be best for piece of mind

Hey, did you get anywhere with this? Stripped my capra back to replace the bearings and have found the main pivot torq screw has so much play in the torx fitting it's basically ready to round off despite never being touched before. Tried various torx keys, Inc park etc and all fairly loose. Basically it's gonna round off and I wanna be ready to resolve somehow.

Put it back together and ask your LBS to replace the bearings?

Funnily enough I just received the replacement part in the post today
I couldn’t push the axle through from the other side so I’ve booked it in with a mechanic for them to remove the rounded bolt and then fit the new parts with fresh bearings
There is loads of play in the torx bolt and the new one isn’t much better. I thought the issue was my cheap torque wrench head
Sourcing the part was a bit of a hassle. YT originally said they had it in stock in the UK depot and would post it out to me, then when silent and apologised and said they didn’t have it but would order stock from Germany and then when pressed for a date said they didn’t know when they would be able to get any parts shipped from Germany.
I ended up setting up a new account with YT but using my aunts address in France and she then posted the part to me.

I think if I’d been braver I may have been able to push the axle through from the other side but I was ****ting it pretty hard and it wasn’t budging. I didn’t want to risk breaking it and being stuck without a replacement

Thanks, good info. They're crap torx bolts for sure, so much play in them. I'm hoping a friend of a friend in Germany will order and post me a replacement since brexit sent us back to the dark ages and you cant order a 10 euro part! Once that's arrived ill probably have to go to the lbs as well. Shame as wanted to do myself.

Watch the recent GMBN video

They covered several ways to resolve this

I think the plan is that once the shit has settled YT will have a stock of all these parts at their Uk depot and we will be able to order straight from there.
A few people have mentioned using denim or a price of rubber glove to get grip on a rounded bolt, I wonder if it’s worth trying this to pack out the loose torx fitting before it rounds?
