After CX last night, my 9yo son was chuntering about his saddle chafing the inside of his legs. This may well be the case as the saddle isn't the most svelte things that I've ever seen and has a pretty chunky nose on it, considering how narrow my son's hips are.

His MTB has an Islabike saddle on it which I had in the cupboard as a spare for his old Creig and he's never complained about that, but there's a big difference between saddle use on an MTB, and doing full day, big-mileage rides on the road bike - or pounding round a muddy field for that matter!

I notice that a lot of his friends have hard, carbon saddles but I am pretty sure that most do little riding on them outside of racing, whereas I'd rather he had something that was comfy enough for both.

So, any recommendations or experience?

Madison have a range of youth saddles, worth having a look at those.

From 12 or so on the kids in our biking group are happy with WTB Volt (low cost version).

No idea if those fit to 9 year.

Soft cardboard bone inprint check: middle inprint to inprint and add 3 or 4 cm. That's roughly how wide the saddle should be (with mtb). But no idea if this is true for kids saddle as well.

In fact, his current saddle is a Madison saddle of some sort. I've no idea which one, actually, as the bike was second hand and it came on it, but I assume it's a youth one. It's noticeably "chunkier" at the nose than the new design Isla ones though.

Thanks, will take a look. Clicked through the first link from Google and it offered to sell me one for $250, so I'm glad you mentioned the low cost version 🙂
