Your favourite tubeless tape?

This week the tubeless fairy has brought me:

An hour and a half of scrubbing gorilla tape residue of a rim

Muck off tape that looked long enough to do a second rim but wasn't

Stand tape that refused to stick to a rim. Fresh stans stuck fine. Has a £20 roll of tape gone off in the garage?

Any recommendations gratefully received!

I use giant rolls of TESA tape, which is the same as Stans but much cheaper. Kept in the house so never freezes. Warm the tape and rum before application and add tube and tyre at 40 psi for 25 hours before use. Seems like a lot of effort but works perfectly and comes off without leaving residue

Most of ours have now got Specialized 2Bliss Ready Rim Strip fitted. Simple solution that just works

I never had luck getting tape like stans to stick so have been using schwalbe rim strips for the last number of years, simple to slip on and off/change etc.

If it's been cold/moist/hot, quite possibly.

I use the bulk tesa rolls of stans tape, lives in the house though. Preparation and technique are everything for deep/awkward rims. People who use gorilla tape to do their rims should be fired into the deepest circle of hell.

Gorilla.

Without sounding like a dick, I'm curious how people seem to have so much trouble with the residue. I've never had more than a few small patches.

Do you rip it off, or pull it gently and let it find it's own pace? I tend to do the latter

I've had loads of problems with getting Tesa to stick and conform, even when warm and pulling hard. Once on it does survive tyre swaps infinitely better than Gorilla though, which tends to pull off with the tyre.

Gorilla Tape, it's cheap and it just works.

If I need to remove the residue (you can just tape over it if you really want to), Just use some IPA and a rag. Pop some tunes/podcast/boring conf call on and mindlessly do it.

Schwalbe tubeless rim tape is by far and away the best I've ever used. Available in lots of different widths (best to use something a couple of mm wider than the rim's internal width)

Stans and Tesa tape doesnt stretch as it sticks so is always a bit creased.

I much prefer kapton tape as it's much stickier and has a bit of stretch.

I've also tried AliExpress ztto tape, really cheap and it works really well. So no really need to spend more on anything too fancy.

Yeah, not impressed with Stan's in general, have used the slightly thinner black stuff (marketed variously by e.g. Pacenti and Vittoria, don't know the generic name) which is at least thinner so conforms slightly better.

Will be experimenting with rim strips in future although if they are thicker than 2 layers of tape I'd be concerned at how difficult it might be to mount and seat the tyres...

Insulation tape topped with Gorilla - love the way it really gets into the rims.

Currently use ebay TESA tape not so impressed - it is cheap tho & will likely last me 10yrs

The kapton tape is really really thin and sticky so it goes on well and doesn't leave any residue, but might need a couple of layers to give it a bit of strength, it's so thin that this isn't an issue. I've used kapton tape that is too narrow and overlapped it and it has also held well which proves the adhesive and the tension you can apply due to it's stretch works well.

My new favourite tape is Kranx. Just installed this week. Its black and like a thinner stans so it flexes more. Putting it on was a doddle and only had the odd areas where it wasn't smooth so quick lift while applying and then down. Stuck down really well. Used newish wheels on gravel bike, new tyres and held air no problem without sealant. Plus it comes in loads of different widths (23mm used in my 21mm ID gravel rims) and its £12. Time will tell how it lasts

Used Gorilla tape, breaks down over time, yellow Tesa ebay stuff was too stiff and didn't stick on one set of rims, Muc off left the worse residue ever that required their own cleaner which was useless. The green Effetto stuff was ok'ish. Stans on DT Swiss has been fine but I didn't fit that.

Warm the tape and rum before application

Not too much rum though as it hinders dexterity.

I use Tesa tape (forget the code now) it's very important to ipa the shiz out of the rim first.

It used to be much cheaper but I think people have cottoned on and it's more expensive now.

Way better than buying a short length of the same stuff with Mucoff branding for the same money though.

Insulation tape. Sticky, stretchy and cheap. Haven't had to remove any yet so no idea about residue.

I'll give the specialized rim strip a go.

I've got the correct size for couple of wheels but can't find the 31mm width anywhere in the UK. Anyone have a source?

Gorilla tape with electrical tape underneath. All the strength and stickiness with zero residue.

Warm stans/tesa tape and a clean rim. No issues with stick then. Yeah it won't work well outside on a cold day though so no good if you are retaping in a race field somewhere.
