I posted on the "tandem curious" thread but then I thought, this deserves a thread of its own.

These guys are brave. I'm not great at jumping myself, I'm not sure I'd even go that big on a solo personally. Given how hard it is to get a tandem in the air compared to a solo, though, I reckon a solo would have ben higher than the captain at the mid point of that jump if they'd hit the jump with the same momentum as the tandem.

I'm not sure I'd trust those forks either, there's a LOT of force going to go through them on landing and they don't look that strong...

True - that one is built for rough stuff though. The one in the first pic is built for shopping 😀

That second one has no central downtube (or whatever the tandem version is called!) and the stoker's seat looks like a Softride style extension. I'd trust the first one more! 🙂

The second one is a custom built carbon-framed Ellsworth/ Calfee Witness. Ellsworth know a bit about bikes.
Ellsworth / Calffee Carbon tandem

see aprox 1min 22secs

this is what normally happens when you "jump" a tandem

through properly designed and ridden they can be awesome

These guys are brave.

Only the one on the front needs to be brave 😀

(Being stoker on a tandem still ranks as one of the most frightening things I've done!)

I do beg it's pardon!

I rode the long-gone long boardwalk on the Red at Laggan on a Tandem with my Brother-in-law as Stoker. I was well impressed we made it as it was a super fine line to keep the front wheel on to ensure the rear tracked OK. I was like "Wow" and my BIL said "Is it over?". He'd had his eyes closed the entire way...

I rode Mabie red as stoker on rigid tandem, behind the Andy H who built the trails there.
I managed to twist the stoker bars on the berms halfway round with the effort I was putting through them through sheer fear...

@DezB

...Ellsworth know a bit about bikes.

If you are talking about Tony Ellsworth himself, I would take your statement literally. Anyone remember "Instant Center Tracking"?

TroutWrestler - I've ridden the boardwalk at Laggan on a tandem on an icy day. We had a great time, but we did slip on the frost on the wood and as we went down my flailing meant I punched my stoker in the face as she got her legs stuck through the frame.

Once we recovered we all took it in turns to take it down Air's Rock.
