My best bike s about 20%. I spend at least that every year on bike stuff. I own nothing else of value. Our current car is about <1% and the one before that lasted 8 years was 0.5%

Think we need to start grouping the scores into the following categories...0-2% "It's just a passing hobby, I'll be playing golf this time next year"
or
0-2% "I've been obsessed with riding bikes for 40 years and by this time know exactly what I want/need which happens to be a small % of my salary"
Not everyone needs multiple bikes and I am actually more content just having one and then concentrating on riding it. You can't gauge level of interest in money some one wants to spend.
It [i]may[/i] also matter how much someone earns too.....

As above, it's the overall cost per year that we should consider as a percentage - so travel, race/event entries, consumables etc. Not worked mine out yet, but suspect it will double the above, if not more.

c.3% - Although I have plenty of money, I'm acutely conscious that my limitations as a rider cannot be solved by hurling money at the problem.

@yak Hmm, I wonder just how much I spend on snap decision purchases? The "Oh, I'll just get one of these" type spends. I think I've spent less than 7% of the bike's cost on consumables over the year.
No idea how much I'll spend on travel but since much of my mountain biking is in the Dales which is on the doorstep it probably isn't a huge amount overall.
N+1 CX was about 2.5%
Looking at the rest of the fleet, probably about 4% each.

I've only bought 1 bike since 2001 at full RRP and only 1 had any 2nd hand parts. End of year sales are your friend, that and/or knowing people in the trade 😆
Current MTB is 5%.
But it was funded by an insurance payout for a bike that was part prize, part corporate health account funded and part warranty replacement.
I suspect it probably cost me approx £300 in real terms...which is A LOT less than 5% of my salary (thankfully).

Time spent on the bike is what counts, not how much it cost you.
4% when I bought it. Just bought another @ a cost of 1.5%.
My problem is I also ahve a tool adiction., I excusses that as I argue that I sometimes make money with them, sometimes save money with them. just last week I save 15 pounds making a component with tooling that I bought for 450. See it makes perfect sense!
The latest one (cx + race wheels) was 1.22% of gross. All the others were bought when I was a student and I don't know how much they cost anyway!

None of us needs to be told that a V8 Mustang is cheaper to run than our bikes! We have enough problems justifying them to the rest of the world that don't get cycling as it is, before anyone realises that done right, it's a bloody expensive hobby!

So my path down the slippery slope over the last 18 months is-
The 'Return to biking after a very long time away from it' entry level mountain bike 0.75%
The 'I'm really quite enjoying this; I'll get a much nicer mountain bike' 3%
The 'Maybe I should try road riding too' bike 2.3%
Now I have reached the points of
The 'I need to upgrade the first mountain bike to make a decent all weather one for winter' 1.5%
and
The 'I'm enjoying road riding as well but I remember that lovely titanium roadie I had all those years ago so maybe I should get another one'- somewhere around 5.5%
Plus about 5% more on gear, and bits and pieces

my best road bike including upgrades stands me at 13.4pence per km since purchas in 2013. I'm going to reduce that a bit more this evening 🙂

I used to say value of car new = salary so interesting to see bike wise
Main bike - 5% of gross at time of purchase. Last bike - 0.8% gross maybe but built on used frame.
I started to think about it but as my income fluctuates a lot I really don't care they are paid for and I ride them
3.3% of gross for frame and forks. Other bits were from old frames
0.4% second hand.
