Yeti 575 - getting it back on the (off) road?

So, in the loft is an old love; a Yeti 575, anodised pewter - a thing of loveliness. Me and that bike have some history; Himalayas, Rockies, New Zealand, Alps, Iceland, BC, Swaledale (a lot) - I loved it for years and years. As you do, I was tempted away by 1x gearing and modern geometries. But I have a hankering to resurrect the bike; not as a retro thing, but just to ride. A while ago I sold my full sus (Orange Four) as I just didn't fall in love with it.

I have the rolling chassis; frame, Fox fork, Hope wheels etc. It ran (of course) 3x9 back in the day but I'd want to go 1x. The shock and fork will need a fettle.

Question is, how feasible to go 1x? Would a 1x11 cassette fit on the wheels? Chainline; would that work? I have a spare GX Eagle crankset; would that work with 11 speed (likely Shimano as I have an XT shifter, cassette and mech somewhere.

Or are past loves left as happy memories? I'm old enough to not worry about being fashionable (hardtail has 650b+ tyres) but will the memories stand up today?

Should be fine mate, can’t see anything you’ve got standing in the way. New chain ring possibly?

You've got nothing to lose, and the orange 4 is old enough that you don't really have much experience of proper nu-skool, so ignorance is bliss...

No help at all but my Yeti 575 is still my favourite bike I’ve ever owned. I sold mine to my brother so still get to ride it around his garden for old times sake. Lovely looking bikes in my opinion and a shame they didn’t do an updated 750b version instead of ditching it for the sb66.

8,9,10,11 speed cassettes all fit on the same std Shimano freehub, no issues there. There are more options for wide range cassettes in 11 speed than 10, especially if you want lightweight, so 11's the right call, I reckon - and you've got the shifter anyway.

Chainline - I'd build it up and see. Easier to figure out where you are when it's all on the bike. If your chainset happens to be super boost or something and the chainline is out from the middle of the cassette, you might have options to bring it back in again with a chainring with different offset. Or it might shift fine anyway - at least while you wait for a new chainring.

Same here. My son used it for a couple of years, til he outgrew it (will find picture of him getting it more airborne than I ever did!)
I went 2 X 10 on it, with a bashguard so just kept the old crank.
Your pewter one must be the old knuckle design? Still got my frame, amazing thing. I could actually ride back then too 🙂
Last time I rode it, straight from a 29er, it frightened me how twitchy and quick it felt. This was at Rogate DH park, I didn't dare get on it again 😆

Very, Here' my ARS-C which is probs about the same vintage

Yeti ASR-C

Would a 1×11 cassette fit on the wheels?

Yes if you've got regular Shimano HG, there's any number of cassette options

Chainline; would that work?

Yes, you'll want about 48-49mm. which should be pretty standard for your bike

stick a dropper post on and 1x10 ( get a 11-50T range) and youll be well away. Miss my ASR5C of a similar vintage but the wheels were just too small.

It had a Fox DOSS on it; weird thing with several fixed drop positions and a properly hideous dual trigger shifter. Not in my possession any more thank god.

Ah yes, I had a Reverb dropper with external routing on my one - luckily I think the non-knuckle frame has a larger seattube diameter

Yeah I had the same (Reverb with external cable) I'd be tempted to drill the 575 (no warranty issues after all) and stealth it anyway.

Not the 575 but my old 5 alloy. It's such a shame that Yeti stopped doing alloy frames as they were absolute masters at them. It's still my favourite bike I've had. It was dug out the attic and rebuilt for my son.

It was stolen not long after this photo was taken (however due to 'new or old' I got £6k for it..)

I was hoping to see the previous 575 with the top tube knuckle. I don't know why anodising isn't more popular, such a tough finish 🙂

I ran mine 1*11 for a while. The only thing I'd be aware of is the low ground clearance when running a big cassette and mech on a 26" wheel. A 2x setup with a narrower cassette and short cage mech might pick up less grass and sticks.

I converted a 1996 26" HT to 1*10 a few years ago. Ran it like that for a season, then rebuilt it to its original factory/team spec (3*9xtr). No issues with anything.

Currently have 1*11 on an early 00s 26" HT. Tried a 11-51 briefly and caught the mech a few times. So now it's 11-42 with the shortly shorter mech/better ground clearance.

I'll join the Yeti love-in. My 2011 (?) ASR-5. It was a great bike at the time, and in my mind the last time I could afford a truly top-spec bike before the bike industry went crazy with top-end bike prices. It didn't want for anything really, XTR groupset (M970), Thompson / Easton / Reverb (back when they were rare-ish) / posh Revelations.

Good times. It even made it onto the Mail online front page headline in one of their OMG Snow-maggeddon pictures which is quite a claim to fame!

Buuuut, I'm more than happy remembering the good times and leaving that bike in the past. Lovely as it was for the time, if I rode it again now I'm quite confident I'd be disappointed vs a modern bike.

I loved my 575. Had it over six years, the swingarm cracked twice, one warranty, one third party repair before the carbon parted company with the alloy bearing housing for the main pivot. That final episode happened on holiday (day 3 I think…..) and I bought an ASR5C frame as a replacement. Had the headset installed by the shop and rebuilt the rest in the campsite 🏕️ whilst @ahsat cooked curry for tea and supplied me with beer. The 5c was a much better bike for me, it was lighter, taughter, stiffer, then I killed it on honeymoon coming down Helvellyn. I hit an iceberg of a rock with the downtube, it remained intact but creaked 😢

My Mk1 Cotic Soul is a bike revitalised after fitting a non boost NX Eagle groupset and Dub bottom bracket from Wiggle. All your questions answered in the Q&A section there.

The GX eagle will take a non boost chainring - I think both d sync and x sync 2 chainrings work with 11 speed.

Use a Sram X1 chain for a nice reliable and not too pricy 11 speed chain - will work with Shimano or Sram.

I ran an 11 speed 11-42 or 11-46 Sunrace cassette (I think) on a 26er hardtail and that was ok. Can’t remember which it was 100%. That was a 2004 Kona Caldera I think.

I’d make sure you stick a dropper post on it - brand x do an external one usually - or just drill the frame for a stealth dropper. Don’t be tempted to get a Reverb - they’re find until they’re not and then it gets spendy / annoying. Brand x just works.

I always figured Yeti's with the curved top tube - like the old Santa Cruz Nomad - look like dogs having a ****, but to each their own.
