Firstly, sorry for yet another tyre thread!

Ok, so I have a week in the Pyrenees coming up that involves a good chunk of climbing, 7,000m in six days and loads of descending. Currently have a 2.3" Exo DHR2 out back with a 2.5" DHF on the front.

I'd like something tough, fast rolling and doesn't weight a ton, I know I'm asking a lot. I was all set to go with a 2.3" DD Aggressor but now can decide as they're pretty weighty, listed at 1.1kg, heavier than a DD DHR2. Also needs to pair well with 30mm wide rims.

So inspire me with suggestions that aren't WTB's (bad experiance), thanks 🙂

SG Rock Razor

I was going to say Tough Fast Trail Boss, though the 2.25 might be a bit narrow for 30mm rims anyway.

tough 29er that doesn't weigh a ton? not possible!

and I would also say WTB, I found the breakout very good indeed on the back.

You can get Minion SS in DoubleDown casing, comes in at 40g over a kilo.

Yet to wreck my wire bead Vittoria Mezcal, 2.2 is a bit skinny but the 2.6 is mahoosive. Reports of there being some odd sized 2.35's out there which actually sized up the same as the 2.2.

MSC Tractor 2.2 comes up 2.3 fast rolling, pretty tough or the Single track if more grip is needed.

Ardent? I use in on back - it’s great - the side knobs let go when you least expect it and the grip is mediocre, spices up even the most mundane trail;-)

Fast rolling up ie semi slick, means no braking grip down. Maybe worth considering if you're going to be riding steep downhill trails.

I did a week in the pyrenees in April (I suspect it was the same week as you're about to do) and had a 2.5 DD Aggressor out back. I think every rider on the trip (including four guides) punctured their rear tyre, except for me, I was the only one with a DD tyre out back.

didn't we talk about this 2 weeks ago?  Dont agree with Gotama, depends on the conditions.

https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/2-3-or-2-5-maxxis-aggressor/

Dont stress the weight too much. Punctures are a holiday ruiner  and a bit of weight never hurt anyone 🙂 Pressure and compound will make it draggy . Enjoy!

@honourablegeorge going with Altitude Adventure on their Summit to Sea trip.

@howsyourdad1 thanks for calling me out 🙂 you're right of course, I'm just looking for alternatives.

2.3" Aggressor DD is looking likely to be the choice, though I'm also considering the Rock Razor & Specialized Slaughter. The Minion SS is apparently a bit skinny for wide rims.

E13 does a semi-slick which is a decent weight and width. I’ve spent a lot of time on the normal 29er TRS+ & Race versions and they are pretty tough.

We had a week in Ainsa last year whilst our daughter was competing in the EWS. She ran a Butcher 2.3 Blck Dmnd, we ran Minion Dhr WT 2.4 EXO Dual and a 2.3 Slaughter Grid. All 29ers. It was hot and dusty. I wish I had the Slaughter on for the climbs.

Just put a Rock Razor on the back of my nukeproof, it rolls very fast.

It isn't the weight that matters, it's the rolling resistance. The two are often linked (hence the anecdotal evidence on heavy tyres being harder to pedal) but not inextricably. Something harder compound, heavier carcass, decent volume, and I'd stick a Rimpact Sendnoodz in it because they're cheap, light and effective at preventing pinching. Go semi-slick if you're ok with the front tyre doing 95% of the braking (I'm not, on steep stuff anyway).

Do they make a dual compound DD casing DHR2 2.3? I think that size and tread pattern is the fastest rolling tyre ever that also has serious braking and cornering grip. The 2.4 rolls way slower, sadly.

Pump up the tyre at the bottom of the big long climbs.

If its dusty/marbly semi slicks are a liability, even more so if its steep!

New michelin rear tyre looks to be a good compromise between knobbles and faster rolling, still with a decent side lug.

Minion SS's on wide rims dont work, the side knobs touch the ground, conversely a rock razor doesn't, but you've got to get the thing leaned right over to get to the side knobs.

+1 Rock Razor. I know some really don't like them but I'm a fan. I tend to brake more on the front though, so it suits how I ride.
