Still, after 5 years out in the rain, my two learning to ride on it , being used as a pool bike for the street (13 kids) and being run over (hence the handlebars) - it didn't do too badly!

Also, how come the bearings in the wheels still run reasonably smooth after all that time in the rain and my Hope/ Shimano ones last months or even weeks?

That's shocking, I'd be right on the manufacturer demanding a replacement frame. Looks like a defect in the grain of the wood has allowed water to ingress over time and weaken the structural integrity.

Id be contacting orange to see if they will warranty that.. you might be unlucky and get a new downgraded five frame

Don't think that particular model is warrantied to run a basket up front - i'd take that off before you send it back for warranty assessment.

bolt-through rear end obviosuly made the frame too stiff.

Dont be gay !! couple of panel pins and some white wood glue youl get another 5 years out of it easy !! that white glues stronger than the wood itself ! (says on the tub !) 😆
