As the the winter nears and we get closer to lights-at-1100 season, I was wondering if there’s any benefit in yellow tinted sunnies for the winter gloom? I’d read somewhere that they’re supposed to improve contrast etc?

any benefit in yellow tinted sunnies for the winter gloom?

Use a high definition yellow lens and there will never be any gloom.

No, I'd be interested to see what come up. I have a set of Oakley Half Jackets that they no longer make, I've used their high definition yellow lens for donkeys years and I really like them. I presume Oakley still offer the lens in other frames, but I'd be interested in other (cheaper) options.

I’ve got POC DO Blades which I really like… but they’ve stopped making yellow lenses for them.

In my experience, any coloured tint noticeably stops light transmission so I only ever wear clear lenses in low light to stop insects and mud

I've got Lidl sunnies with the pale yellow specs good in every situation though clear lenses would be better in very low light situations. (lost the clear lenses that came with them) . Cheap too which is handy.

When I say ‘low light’ I mean winter gloom rather than night riding (which I won’t get a domestic pass for). I can get clear lenses for my existing sunnies…

Hi def yellow lenses may not look cool but they are great for dull days and woodland riding.

@cheers_drive Let’s face it, as a tubby middle aged man on a mountain bike looking cool is about the least of my worries.

I had a pair and found the reduced light transmission outweighed the contrast improvement

I was never all that fussed by yellow lenses, they never seemed to offer any benefit over clear. And if the sun made an appearance then I’d regret yellows immediately and painfully; they’re horrible in anything other than complete grey IME.

I did have a pair of blue-tinted Rudys once, and I liked those for making me believe the sky was lovely and blue when it wasn't 🙂

Massively improve my vision and really brighten everything up. Wouldn’t go without them now. Some really mixed reviews here maybe it depends on the brand; I’m using Adidas Evil Eyes which are a little older style but they were/are mid range cost wise.

I bought the lenses new for them last year specially for winter riding.

I used to have yellow safety specs, made reading tool dials eg micrometers sooo much easier for whatever reason.
Based on this, bought a pair of yellow tinted SunDog glasses at an airport in Canada. These were my biking glasses for years, made picking out a line in a murky forest much easier, it was like the outlines of rocks, roots, etc had been drawn over in heavier pen, if that makes any sense.
Gutted when I lost them somewhere up Afan a few years back.

This time last year on the way to Coed y B I picked up 2 pairs for me and the lad from Decathlon. Not expecting much for £3 but have been superb. Definitely brightens up a dull day!

Where did you buy the lenses for your evil eyes
I have a pair with photochromic lenses but a bit scuffed and would like new lenses
They only cost me £30 out TK Maxx so they owe me nothing

I bought them from a place called Vision3k, I’d not heard of them but they weren’t too expensive so I took the gamble.

The website was/is a bit crap and I got the large lenses by mistake first time round.

Emailed and all sorted very quick, posted me the small ones FOC. I’d probably email them to confirm the model number you need first and then order.

Love them on a grey day. At least it looks like the sun's out!
