Grotty, rainy, morning, had flashing light on front, turning right at a mini roundabout. One of those ones that's basically a t-junction, I was entering from the 'stem' of the T. @51.714052,-1.9704941,19.15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x2366f99928ad14f5!8m2!3d51.7134529!4d-1.9713311">Here, in fact, I was on Ashcroft road, turning right onto Sheep Street
Clear right, cars coming from left, so I wait for one that's clearly not stopping to go through and clear the roundabout. Next car slows, I think it's stopping and pull into roundabout, then realise at that point that it wasn't. Caught the side of it/it caught the side of me, bike kind of reared up and bang, flat on my back. Really, really hurt, I lay on the road swearing for a good couple of minutes.
She stopped, lady in her 60s/70s, very shook up and apologetic, didn't see you, so sorry etc. Ended up being walked into the vets(!) by the junction, she stayed for a while, kept apologising, left all her details, then I said that she could go. Vets dialled 999, police came (after she'd gone, but they had all her details), then first responder, no damage apart from a very stiff and sore back.
Not really looked at the bike, but clearly something up with it as it wouldn't wheel along (the coppers put it on my work secure carpark, which is next to the vets). I'll get it and check it out over the weekend
Soooo, what now? Call her, get her insurance details? I'm a member of British Cycling, not sure what cover I get with them.
Meanwhile, it's cocodamol and ibuprofen for a few days.
Commiserations. 🙁
Call BC first, you'll have accident assistance cover unless it's a bronze race level membership I think. Let them sort it, or at least give you the correct advice. Getting the police involved was the right thing to do as you were injured.
I’d say this is exactly what BC membership is for - ive recently signed up having seen so many threads with people being knocked off on their commute.
Guessing dithery Doris was just dilly dallying / going slow which made you think she was going to stop - some people just shouldn’t be driving.
I put a light on for the first time in months today - not a huge one but running it on full power / steady beam. Might be time to put a flashing one on next to it as well soon.
Ended up being walked into the vets(!) by the junction.
Good on you - didn't delay any of those massively important car drivers whose five seconds is worth more than your life!
This stuff makes me cross.
At least it sounds like you're going to be OK.
Ouch - still, no breaks or major injury, sort of a "win"
(I bloody hate those sorts of junctions - there's one near me (also right by a Waitrose, funnily enough) where exactly the same risk applies. Even in the car I'm shitting it as I pull out as it's even more blinded than that one of yours)

I dunno. Maybe I'm too soft, but she obviously slowed to look, that's why I assumed she was slowing to stop, and she just didn't see me. It was a grotty day, I did have a light, but I was wearing a black jacket and black overtrousers. People make mistakes, she stopped immediately, was incredibly apologetic, was determined she was going to wait for me until the ambulance. I'm honestly not that mad at her, she's probably learned a lesson, as have I.
Sounds like she had the right attitude to be fair to her which is something.
I was actually slightly expecting qwerty to be my first responder 🙂
You forgot the unwritten rule, you give way to the right approaching a roundabout, unless it's a cyclist!
GWS and hope bike is alright and stupid driver promptly covers all incurred damages/expenses.
Sadly it's not a case of if but when you get done, or seems that way anyway.
Definitely call BC and get things rolling on that front. As you've had injuries and a damaged bike expect the cost to go up quickly for the replacement costs and any physio you will need. My commuting crash (doored) ended up with similar injuries and a written off bike and by the time I'd added in recovering my wages for my employer the total settlement was nearly £8.5k. Took two years to sort out too and that was using Leigh Day who really helped get things sorted.
You will hurt more tomorrow!!
It's a bit after the fact, but my advice is that get witnesses names and addresses (I'm mainly posting this for others who are reading this and will unfortunately have this happen to them).
I was in the same position as IHN back in May - with the same attitude towards the driver that caused it. Trouble is, it makes no difference to the insurance claim what the driver says; as far as I can tell, the driver in my incident has admitted liability to his insurers but they are holding out. I'm sure if I had got hold of the details for the two sets of witnesses that saw my accident then I'd have a shiny new bike now. As it is they are playing a waiting game.
Best of luck healing IHN please remember that things such as trapped nerves etc take time to reveal themselves (my physio only finished about 5 weeks ago and I got that through a scheme at work in order to get prompt attention after the pin and needles in my fingers started)
Incidentally, I'm using Bikeline.co.uk for my claim. So far as I can tell they've been excellent!
+1 blobonastick
Photos & witnesses are a must - a lesson I learned after witnessing a near fatal rtc, so luckily we were the witnesses needed but photos would have helped hugely with the resulting court case.
I did see a fella that I know from work on the pavement (I was about 100yds from work), I don't know if he actually saw it happen but I've mailed him to ask. I'm not sure how the driver could contest though; they hit me on the roundabout, and they should have seen me and given way. Anyway, we'll see.
I've rung BC, waiting for their legal bods to ring back.
Physio is an interesting one, I get BUPA cover from work so I could get seen pretty easily.
To be honest, I'm not interested in rinsing the woman, I just want my bike fixed. I hope the frame's okay, it's a PX Stelvio that I've not had long and really like, ad they're not doing them any more 🙁
You will hurt more tomorrow!!
Yeah, t'riffic.
Heard from the fella at work, he saw it and is happy to be a witness.
Any physio/rehab should be provided through the drivers insurance instead of using your BUPA.
The driver that hit me in March was sentenced yesterday for Undue Care and driving without insurance. 9 month ban and £280 fine. Should be grateful that there was a conviction, but does seem like loose change for a badly broken back and probably a lifetime of pain.
That's good. (BUPA and a witness)
That's the thing, my accident was on a roundabout, it can't really have been anyone else's fault. But without witnesses the claim is dragging on.
Thinking about it though, this actually might be for the best because if they had settled within the 'automatic' timeframe then some of my muscular damage issues may not have been picked up before the claim was made.
Any on-going pain, or any tingling in your limbs, get yourself to A&E to get your Spine Xray'ed. Mine was badly broken at just 13mph when a car turned into me.
Don't forget to write everything down, and take photo's of the junction.
Get your self along to hospital and get properly checked out.
Just let BC deal with the rest of it.
Write stuff down and keep any receipts for anything you have to pay for. Taxi's to the hospital/parking/ medication that kind of stuff.
Mrs stus has just had her wrist cast off after being hit by a car six weeks back and we're still sorting insurance out now.
Are the Police interested in talking to here?
We've not heard anything back from our lot after filling out all the forms.
Seems they're not bothered despite the old bat finally admitting it was here fault...
I’m not sure how the driver could contest though; they hit me on the roundabout, and they should have seen me and given way.
Indeed, and now you have a witness you can prove she hit you on the roundabout. Without a witness, her verbal admission is nothing - she'd need to put it in writing, or admit it in court. You say you're not interested in rinsing her, but it won't be her that pays, it'll be her insurance. You have to take a hard line if you want your bike sorting.
I bunked off work yesterday afternoon and went out for a short ride, meaning that I was on country roads between 4 and 5.30 pm. It was massively different from riding the same roads at weekends or evenings; traffic was far heavier and every driver seemed to be in a hurry, some even passing me on blind bends going fast down my favourite downhill. One driver was openly smoking a joint. Madness.
How's the aches and pains today IHN? A nights sleep is usually enough to bring out the worst of em,
How’s the aches and pains today IHN? A nights sleep is usually enough to bring out the worst of em,
I've got to say, not half as bad as I thought they would be. Discovered a bit of a twinge in my abs that wasn't there yesterday, I'm pretty stiff, but, generally, not too bad. I am alternating between cocodamol and ibuprofen every two hours though (and the effects of those on my innards are, erm, aromatic...).
The lady rang me today, to see how I was doing and to apologise again. She asked how I was, I said stiff and sore. She said again that she was very sorry, it was a horrible day, wet conditions, not very visible (hmm...). She then said that she was glad that I was okay, very sorry again. She was obviously about to hang up when I said that there was still the damage to my bike, and intended to get it checked out, would expect her to cover the costs and I'd be in contact next week and she said "okay, we'll go from there". I sensed it went a bit frostier at that point, she seemed to want to get off the phone. So we'll see.
I think she thought that she'd be ringing to check up and apologise (which is good of her, fair enough) and that would be the end of it. I think the bike hadn't crossed her mind, and as soon as I started talking money she started thinking she should maybe keep a bit schtum. I'll do what I said I was going to do though, happy to keep it as amicable as I can, if all else fails I have the legal cover with BC, I'll set them on her.
Please don't deal with her. Get her insurance details and give them to BC, then let the experts at BC do their thing.
She might be a lovely little old lady but she's not going to be paying for your physio.
Edit: having been through this twice myself, keep it all above board and legit. Report it to the police, they'll probably send her on a driver improvement course which sounds like it would help given she ran you over in broad daylight! And go through her insurance, not her.
Get her insurance details and give them to BC, then let the experts at BC do their thing.
This, definitely. If even you are sensing a change in tone when money comes up, then chances are it will go pear-shaped when the real bill comes in. Concentrate your efforts on getting better and making sure your witnesses are sorted out.
Ensure you record and report that she phoned you rather than the other way around and record as many details of the call as possible. I.e. Repeated apologies and admittance to fault etc.
The physio team in Ciren leisure centre (Markland Clinic) are very good. Hope you heal up soon, and get this sorted.
