Been having a look at the base model Jeffsy 29er
What’s the thoughts? Looks s decent value for money, a touch heavy maybe. Can’t justify the carbon one in these time.
Any advice appreciated
Well the frame, wheels & suspension will be on par for that price. Decent tyres and finishing kit too.
It's just the SX transmission components I'd look at replacing if I were considering one.
Shifter, rear mech, cassette and chain could be removed and eBay-ed, replacing with 11sp Shimano (perhaps a Sunrace cassette) pretty cheap.
If it's an external BB then it'll be easy to swap the chainset and BB to Shimano as well.
Pink bike just reviewed one, probably worth a look.
I'd also look at swapping the Guide T brakes for 4-pot Deore ones.
I can't justify any new bikes at the moment, but when they announced the aluminum frame was finally getting updated geometry I was sorely tempted.
Yari fork has an upgrade path (yari-up, charger, others), and the rest seems like good value rather than cheap kit. Apart from the drivechain, I've never heard a good thing said about SX. But at least it's a DT hub so you can just buy* a microspline conversion and buy SLX at the end of the summer.
I wouldn't have said 33lb was even particularly heavy, a 23lb enduro bike would be nice, but 33 is light enough not to be an issue.
*Yes I realize this is decadent and a waste of money and the drivechain on a £2k bike should last, but at least it's consumable stuff that they've cheeped out on, think of it as a £2500 bike, but you get to ride it for 6 months before having to make the final payment.
If it’s an external BB then it’ll be easy to swap the chainset and BB to Shimano as well.
I think it's PF41.
I'm in two minds about press fit. My cross bike has a proper cannondale BB30. It doesn't last as long as a shimano BB, and creaks horribly on the way out, but with the correct extractor and press (about £30 for the pair on ebay) is a doddle to change. Just about to try some cheap ceramic hybrid bearings to see how they last. Half the price of standard branded bearings so will see how they last, I'm kinda thinking BB bearings may as well not be sealed, the seals don't seem to last long anyway so harder bearings might be the way forward.
yeh I’ve read a few good reviews think basic shock and the ax shifter was the only real negative things. Anybody on here got one?
I was just looking at the new Jeffsy and I've discovered that having a press fit is a immediate blacklist for me...
to be honest I’ve never had a pressfit bb.
Is this a major no no?
My current bike is 5 years old with sram gxp which wears out quick but simple and cheap to replace
No doubt many would consider me a luddite but there's nothing wrong with a good old thread in my book. My main bike has a six year old Hope bottom bracket (new bearings, obviously) and ten year old Deore cranks...
Wouldn't say having a press fit bb is a major no.
Ive had threaded bbs on all my bikes so far, but in 2018 got a capra with a press fit bb. It's been fine, changed it last week because it was worn. It was easy enough to change.
The difference I find between press fit and threaded is that a press fit creaks when the bearings are worn, whereas a threaded one doesn't. Which means a threaded one can soldier on untill it actualy develops play. Presumably the threads dont transmit the creaking noise so well.
But its not scary to change the brearings, I paid £12 for an extractor and £12 for a press, it takes about 15 minutes to take the crank off, pull the bearings out, wipe the bb clean, dripple on some loctite bearing compound, press the new ones on, and refit the crank.
Bearings cost from a fiver for generic ones, £20 for the full FSA kit including new seals and spring washer, £24 for generic ceramic bearings, £50 for top quality bearings, £80+ for branded ceramic bearings.
I've only had to do it twice but I'm tempted to just buy £5 bearings and accept it as something that needs doing every 6 months.
I think a lot of people either have a creaky one and dont bother to do anything about it, or assume it's going to be a PITA to sort out.
Also some frames were just bad. Cannondale BB30 bearings sit directly in the frame and generally seem to do well. Others used PF30 which presses cups into the frame and bearings into the cups which seem to get much worse reviews. I think Hope and others made PF41 bearings to solve the problem by making the bearings the same outer diameter as PF30 thus eliminating the creaky cups.
I love the Jeffsy, bar the PF41 as others say, but i find this base model a weird one, it's fighting the likes of the canyon spectral al 5 and the calibre sentry, the latter having easier access to testing and warranty, both having better specs.
My mate has an older (2016?) base Al Jeffsy 29 and it's bloody brilliant. A mate and I rode fancy carbon oned with the newer geometry at a demo day last year, and it was bloody ace. Set a heap of PBs, and had a riot doing it. My mate who I went with was all set to buy one until he realised that the AL ones that were in his budget weren't the same Geo. Now they've updated it to be the same it's a very tempting proposition.
I’ve had one in my basket for a while now.
I’d like a Ripmo AF but not sure I can stretch to £3k.
I’m holding off on buying a bike right now though to see if my employer makes it though this shitstorm, so by the time we’re done if I do still have a job I’m hoping I’ll have a bit more cash (as I’m not spending much being at home) and I can either go for the Jeffsy plus some upgrades, the Ripmo AF or maybe that Privateer 141 will be out by then to further muddy the waters 😀
I did think press fits were a no no. But I have two YT's both with them. One is 4yrs old, the other 3. Neither have creaked. One wore out and I replaced it. It was not hard or expensive.
I ride them a lot all year.
Im sure you can get some crap designs where a PF will creak and cheap ones that last a winter, but thats not always the case.
On a similar note, i'm looking at the base capra for uplift days. I assume most of the comments on the Jeffsy read across? Anyone have any Capra Base thoughts?
I've got a 2018 Capra with a press fit, It creaks when it's worn out and I replace it with a shimano xt for about £12 which takes all of 10 mins and they last about 9-12 months of regular use which includes a lot of miles in the wet and abrasive conditions of a Surrey Hills through winter.
I also have a SRAM DUB press fit on my Scott Spark which has done 1400 miles and is still going strong.
I have the al base 27 and it's my favourite bike to ride. Pedals well for a big bike with no lockout, I don't mash the pedals though, I just spin up to the top and the seating position is very comfortable and I've done some big pedally days on it.
When it goes down though it's just brilliant. Use it in Surrey a fair bit, been to BPW on it loads of times and I took it to Morzine for the first time last summer and it was faultless. It's surprisingly nimble too.
That’s good to know muggomagic
How do you find the rear shock with not having compression adjustment??
Yeah it’s fine so long as you are happy to sit and spin up the climbs. Gets bouncy when you try and stand up and mash the pedals.
I've got the 2018 Jeffsy base, ridden it loads in all weathers, not serviced it yet over the last 2 years, I know I should have & keep intending to, had zero problems, I'd recommend it!

I was talking about my Capra btw.
I've just sold myself on press fits!
CX bike, took minutes to swap it last night, longest task was wiping the old grease off the axle.
Road bike, shop had sent the wrong kit (mtb not road), nevermind thinks me as the cups will be the same. Nope external cups are 1mm narrower, drive side threaded section about 3mm longer. After much swearing and faffing in and out with spacers I got it to work without either of the central sleeve, or the axle spacer/seal that sits inside it, and had to swap the FSA wavy washer for a race face x-ring.
1 SKU, one set of tools, no faffing! Why can't everything on a bike be that simple?
Thanks for all the comments guys, much appreciated.
Decision has been made to buy one but never had a 29er before so next decision before I his the button is 27.5 or 29. Oh decisions decisions 😎
27.5 vs 29 seems to be very much a personal thing. I've ridden a couple of good 29ers (ibis ripmo, and specialized enduro) and whilst it felt very easy to be fast on them, almost effortless, there's something about the way they ride that I don't like, I just felt a bit detached from the ground, can't really put my finger on it.
It's probably just a setup thing that could be sorted out, as they weren't my bikes and I've no doubt I would get used to it, but I just prefer 27.5 I think.
It's probably no big deal really, probably just that I'm more used to 27.5.
If it helps, my Jeffsy CF Pro Race 29 is the most agile 29er I've ridden, it's the bike that sold me on good 29ers. I'm on an XXL size model though!
My Capra is the first/only 27.5 bike I’ve had and it’s a great bike, really fun to ride. The only bikes I’m buying now though are 29ers. My spark is a 29er and I just really like the way they ride and motor over stuff.
At the Jefsy's price point I'd definitely look into Bird's offerings. Nicer frames and way way better warranty service.
If you could stretch it to 3k I'd either pic a better speced Bird or a Ripmo AF.
Regarding PF BBs, I don't think they're the end of the world, but I would never buy a bike with one when there is a much better option available
