Hey chaps,

I'm looking at replacing my GX drivetrain on the Bfe, and the prices of XTR/XT are interesting.

I run a mix of 12sp X01 and GX on my other bikes, and have zero experience of the latest XT and XTR group.

How good are the XTR and XT shifters and mechs compared to each other? Is it worth the extra for XTR?

Cheers!

Ricks

I've had both and also deore. They all work great when set up right. I think new cables make more difference.

In my experience it's all about weight saving. Xtr also comes with 3 years warranty as opposed to 2.

With the extra weight saving I found that they don't seem as robust. For example I'd never buy xtr pedals again.

I have a mix and match at the moment, xtr cranks on all my bikes though.

I love XT. I've had some that's still going strong after fifteen years. XTR shifters are lovely, but the XTR front mech I had disintegrated after a few years.

Everything xt with an XTR shifter is what I would get from trying different combos the shifter is the most noticeable difference.

+1 for wiggles.
I've trashed too many XTR rear mechs to be able to justify the cost when xt is so good.
Shopping around I've also always managed to find a XTR shifter for not much more than the XT so could always justify it 🙂

Can't go wrong with XT, but I have upgraded to XTR shifter and bottom bracket on one bike, you can save some cash with an SLX chainset.
Ran XT rear mech and cassette on all my bikes for decades. XT or XTR shifter is a must have on every bike I've owned.

Thanks everyone!

Sounds like what it is for SRAM - high end shifter, mid spec mech.

Those replying - are you referring to the latest 2020/21 kit?

In my case I'm talking about the very last 11 speed versions so not 20/21 kit.

I'm on 11 speed shimano.

Got an XTR shifter, XT mech and SLX crank on one bike and XTR shifter, XTR mech and XT crank on the other.

Both have the sunrace MX8? 11-46 cassette for better gear range.

The SLX crank finish is more durable than XT - the finish on the XT cranks on my other bike were worn after one ride.

XTR shifter is nice and worth the extra. XTR derailleur looks bling but you are only paying for less weight compared to XT then are functionally identical. I wootuldn't get another.

Is it 12 speed? If so you'll not benefit from the Hyperglide+ on the cassette & chain.
Shifting on my 12sp XT (mech/shifter/chain & cassette) is the best shifting I've ever had. Really smooth, especially when shifting under power.

Too late I guess! I’ve been using it for a bit. XT is great and shifting is smooth as you like. The XTR is smoother, in a “have I actually changed” way. The brakes are way improved too. I have XTR on one bike but for the others I opted for the XT because it was more than good enough and I didn’t feel the need for the XTR. I guess you chose the sram cassette because of the microspline. If you get the chance to change to shimano in the future I really recommend it. The ratios on the cassette I find much better than the bigger jump on the sram.

That’s a summary. There are so many cool features and the touch points and feel are so improved.
