I have a pair of brakes, 1 XT and 1 XTR. They are set up as XTR rear but I can swap them over with a change of hoses and mounts. Is there any difference in power/ mechanism between the two or is it just weight
Will I gain anything by changing the XTR to the front?

Depends on the models. If they're newer ones then the XT has more adjustability etc so I'd be tempted to leave that on the front as that's where most stopping power is needed.
