MY 11sp XTR shifter shifts fine into lower gears, but the paddle doesn't always return to position and I have to manually flick it baclk. It's a good few years old and I think it's had a few knocks.

Previous forays into opening up shifters have not gone well.  Cables are in good nick, fully enclosed, and recently replaced.

Andyone had this issue and founf it to be an easy fix?

From memory there's a small screw in there that can make its way loose and drop into the bottom of the shifter that causes this. It's actually quite hard to find the screw as its really small and there's a few things inside the shifter it can drop behind.

You'll have to go inside it. It's a bit fiddly but doable. Find that screw, pop it back where its meant to be and reassemble. There's nothing that explodes as you open it or anything, just take your time to figure it out.

Interesting..... so there's probably a telltale rattle inside if that's happened, right?

I had this with xt 8000 shifters on my wife's bike, it was caused by the brake lever hard up against the shifter, when I tightened it up it deformed the shifter body. So just move any other clamps on your bars away from the shifter and see if that helps.
And lube your cables?

Hmm - I do jam the shofter right up against the brake.

Cool, a few things to look into. Thanks all.

Mine didn't rattle cos the screw had properly wedged itself behind something else in the shifter.
