Probably been a thread before but there it is which brakes to get xtr race or trail? I'm riding rm altitude 160/150mm riding vancouver island trails all around technical singletrack don't intend any downhill or bike park. love to push it hard not most agressive but always try to go as fast as I can. My bike is around 26lbs8oz(12kg) and I'm 155 lbs (70kg). Or mix of race lever and trail caliper weight saving or peace of mind power efficiency?

The race is a race brake though? No on the fly reach adjust and things like that. Kind of aimed at the guy who strips and rebuilds more etc. The trail is the user brake or XT with less weight. In reality is either worth it over the standard XT or if power is a concearn (at 70kg it shouldn't be) Saint.

The Rally Edition bike only comes with XT which is what most people I know seem to get on with.

What are you replacing and what do you want from the upgrade?

I have xt m8000 now and works great just looking to shed a few grams I don't see the Point of xtr trail for only 40 or so grams that's why I'm looking at race 85 something grams. I don't really adjust lever,it's a one time kinda adjustment for me just worry about braking power and overheating with race

Trail FTW, kids.

Race is for lycra whippets.

XTR is ace, XT only second-to-ace. Get XTR - Feel ace.

Why not do both weight saving and peace of mind and buy something else?

I say this with full experience of several sets of M9020 trail brakes. I've gone Hope Tech 3 E4 front and X2 rear.

Lighter than my XTRs, more reliable, no special tools required to bleed, all fittings are reusable.

I've got the xtr race brakes on my 29er spark, paired with 160 rotors, while they are great brakes and think that they are the best brakes for xc, I think for your application the trail brakes would be better, as while the races do have a phenomenonal amount of power, you really do need to be pulling hard on the lever, to access it.

That seems like quite an expensive way of losing not much weight. Have you been through the rest of the bike for weight savings yet. Don't forget XT uses heavy steel bolts and XTR Race and Trail both use alloy or ti bolts (this is where a lot of the saving comes from) having said that I have some XTR Trails and like them a lot.

There are, I am sure, lighter brakes out there.

Hey daffy looks like the hope are heavier than xtr are they? What about evo e4 front and evo x2 rear any big performance difference between tech3 e4 and regular x2 other than lever adjustment? They sure do looks really good.

When I weighed both, the Hopes were around 50g per pair lighter than the XTRs.

The Tech 3 lever has better leverage than the X2 Race Evo, so more power. The X2 calliper has less power again, but also weighs less than the E4. It make a reasonable choice for a rear brake.

What about xtr trail levers with trail up front xtr race out back? Heard hope are quite different than shimano not sure about spending that much without trying them first at least shimano I know what I'm getting. I have 180 rotor front an rear rt98 ice tech.

I'd go Race over Trail, the Race lever does without Servowave so the feel is much more consistent, especially if you run levers close to the bar.

+1 for the Race as, not having the Servowave they are much less grabby though less powerful.

I've had both the new and old versions of the XTR trail and had problems with the modulation changing while riding (biting point pumping up) even when they've they've been bleed properly (i.e. by a shop, not me). I had warranty replacements but ended up just selling them.

I went with Formula RO instead as they're light, powerful and the free stroke actually does something when you adjust it.

So it could make sense to go race lever with trail caliper up front (with 180 rt98 rotor) and race caliper rear (same 180 rotor) does the hope works with shim an rotors? The mix e4/x2 looks good too and almost same price on crc as long I don't need to change rotors.

Just got a really good deal for the race brake so I'll give them a shot (I'll be a lycra whippet now)
