Hopefully a very easy question for someone to answer..... I need to buy an allen key specifically to remove my XTR SPD pedals. Does anyone know which allen key size is required?

8mm and you can get longer ones to give you extra leverage

@ Tom Howard - yes I have lots of allen keys thanks, just not one that's 8mm! Or is that 6 mm!? 🙂

6mm on cheapo Shimano spds
8mm on all Shimano pedals IIRC. Certainly on 520s and above.
520' s take a pedal spanner, XT/XTR require 8mm Allen key.
Or just wait until they shear off like they seem to? 😉
