ive got a year old pair of the newer style xtr spd pedals (not the trail ones), and on the left hand pedal the actual pedal unit is loose and clicking away from the axle, is this buggered or can they be serviced etc? prefer not to throw 90quid down the pan but they didnt sound great at the weekend, im sure if i pulled at it with any force the pedal would detach from the axle? anyone else had this?

Strip it over a bowl to catch the very small balls.

SPDs are fully home-serviceable and will benefit from a strip and regrease.

You may have a loose locknut, or worse, a sheared axle at the cone and locknut interface.

Only one way of knowing...

tbh You ought to service them as soon as you feel they are not right, if you don't you can take them too far.

All you need is a vice and a few tools - magnetic tray would help.

But don't fully undo them until you've established that balls are gone and/or need replacing - as its a PITA as they are so small.

my xtr pedals, the right side, snapped away from the axle so the pedal body fell off, It didn't at the time cos it was still attached to my shoe. I took it back to a bike shop ( i bought the pedals from a german shop) who sent them back to shimano who sent me out another set grats free under warranty.

So................ you know what to do now, just have proof of purchase and you will be fine
