Morning all

I have a set of the above and the axle has had a falling out with pedal. As I understand it this is a known issue with these pedals however I'm out of warranty time.

Is there a fix for this at all?

Thanks

Just in case you didn't know, XTR has a 2 year warranty.

Has the tip of the axle snapped off?

You can buy new axles http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/pedal-spares-shimano-dept975_pg1/ but it's cheaper to just buy some new XT pedals which only weigh a fraction more and last a whole lot longer!

Yes, tip snapped off in what appears to be the usual place.

Have just seen the cost of the axles which seems a bit steep 😯 Looks like it's new pedals for me, may go back to cheap and cheerful and grab a set of 530's

I like having the extra support from the cage, find it more comfortable on long rides.

I don't think it matters if the pedals are trail or xc. XTR of both variants are very prone to breaking at the spindle tip.
Yes you can buy replacements as already mentioned but I really don't think its worth it.
Speaking as a confirmed weight weenie I'll not be bothering with XTR again and will be happy continuing with XT pedals despite the very slight weight difference.

The cage doesn't look like it'll be anywhere near the shoes for support.

Do they actually add support?

First generation pedals were affected. Suspect they'd be replaced under warranty even if out of warranty technically. Later ones with the bindings attached with Torx bolts rather than Allen bolts are fixed. These have been available for a couple of years now.

Clobber - cage adds lateral support rather than fore and aft. The machined areas are the contact points.

I tried this when mine went 5 weeks out of warranty
Madison wouldn't have anything of it, denied there was even a 'known issue'
Even after I sent an email with over 10 links to different worldwide forum threads all discussing it they still refused to do anything
At one point they even tried to tell me left hand axles where not available to buy separately, only right hand ones!!

I ended up buying some 2nd hand XT pedals

OP which pedal is affected left or right?
I might have a spare pedal if it was the opposite to my failed one

Xpedo are very light, durable and good value SPD compatable pedals for anyone looking to move away from Shimano (loose ball bearings in 985's drove me nuts! 🙂 )

I got a pair of Ti axles from China for £40.

Not coz mine had failed, but because I liked the colour.
