Does anyone know if this can be done or is the FC-35 tool needed for this. I don't have a large allen so haven't tried this yet, but if its possible gonna nip out and buy one.

Not sure about XTR but my SLX preload cap was done up with a bunch of allen keys together - think 2,4 & 6 together as single bunch. Doesn't need be very tight so easily done/ undone.
If it's the same as non xtr a 20p will do it
