Im wandering if this is a common problem with XTR 11 speed derailleurs? I haven't hit the derailleur or anything, it just seems to slip from time to time, and I mean a number of times per ride. It doesn't slip like this if the clutch is in the off position.

Couldn't comment on XTR, but its reasonably common on XT 11 spd. Take it apart and clean/GT85 it and you should be good.

How strange, is the chain long enough?

Just checked the chain length and it's spot on!

^Did you check chain length through the full travel of the rear suspension?

my XT did similar yesterday but I think I hit full compression in bottom gear (top of a steep climb then turned into a chute/drop and forgot to change down) and probably overstretched the mech.

But it happens in almost any gear not just the big cog

Is it actually the clutch that's failed there? I've never had this with the 11 speed shimano but I've had other mechs that would pull forward and jam at the extremes. Though obviously it's the prime suspect if it's only happened with it on.

Something pretty odd's happened to pull the mech into such an extreme position, if you were in a high gear

Hey edward2000 that exact same thing has just happened to mine on Saturday.
Gets stuck halfway when going from a low gear to a high gear and boom chain tension is gone.
If you manually pull it back its fine for a while then it happens again.
I spent a couple of hours on Sunday stripping it down and regreasing as per the manual but it still does it even with the clutch in the off position.
Just filling out the warranty form to return it to Merlin.
Looks like its a bona fide fault then.

Is it just me that thinks the recommended shimano chain length is too short? They suggest big-big plus 2 links, I've been using 4 links so as not to strain the mech so much in the 42t, with two links it seemed to grind a bit

My 10sp SLX did actually the same thing - opened the clutch housing to find the mech rusted and generally looking a bit shit - removed part of it to finish the ride. Cleaned and replaced it all, but it shat itself, part of the switch mech just fell apart.

Enjoyed 0.0001% extra plushness from the year for a few rides, now fitting 11sp XT set up.

Can only speak for myself, but I've never had an issue with +2 links, then again I don't use a clutch rear mech, seen far too many failures on here.

For balance i had a 10 speed XTR clutch rear mech on my last bike for 3 years with no issues other than me snapping the cage a couple of times on trailside obstacles.

I had one that did exactly that. I took the clutch apart, cleaned it, lubed it and put it back together and it didn't help.

I then also took the lower cage off (one bolt behind the top jockey wheel - take that out first) and cleaned the main mech pivot and cage spring out with wire wool and GT85 - it's a steel bushing inside which corrodes and causes the mech to lock like that. BITD they were ti...

^i did that with mine Gee, there is a slight corrosion on the bush but nothing spectacular. The mech has only been on the bike since November 2015.
