Out cycling a few days ago and my left hand crank came off. Massive crack down by the 2 clamp bolts. Don't understand how this happened as bolts correctly torqued and has worked perfectly for 2 years. I noticed the preload cap was missing so did this work loose and fall off in the recent past? Also shouldn't the plastic safety tab prevent the crank from coming off?
Obviously have to buy a new left hand crank now and cheapest I can see is £97. I assume this comes with a preload cap.

Nope
I have a preload cap on a crank on another bike. I could remove that and use to install new crank arm. But should this preload cap be left in place permanently or is it ok to remove once crank is installed?

Yes
XTR warranty is 3 years if you think you might have a genuine claim.
You can buy pre load caps on ebay for a couple of quid. You can even get them in alloy in various colours.
I'm sure if you pop to your local bike shop they will have one in the spares bin.
Struggling to find a preload cap for a M9020 crank arm. Lots for sale but none seem to be suitable for XTR chainset.

As I use the same bottom bracket tool on all my shimano cranks from deore, 105, xt and xtr I'm guessing they are all the same thread, so any shimano pre load will fit.
Its possibly the only standard they've never changed

Except that they have, they just happen to all use the same tool.
Thanks for that, a really difficult part to find. A lot of folk think these are all the same for all Shimano cranks but there not!
