Fitted my XT rear mech (long cage).... When in the smallest ring front and back it is very slack, yet when in the largest ring front and back the cage is alsmost parallel with the chainstay. is this right, or have I set it up wrong?

That's right but you shouldn't ride in smallest front with smallest back or largest front and largest back...."Don't cross the streams" as I tell my kids 😉
