So I've just fitted my new wheels that have brand new XT hubs on them (DT Swiss EX511s and they are fab!!). The XT freehub makes a lovely noise - I think.... Lots more clicks per revolution than my MT501 freehub but I thought the XT would be quieter than it is. My MT501 freehub is pretty near silent and this makes a racket by comparison. I asked the chap at the LBS, who built the wheels, if I should take them apart and add additional lube (as I have read some advice in various places that recommends this) and he advised strongly against. I have had my 501 hub in bits as the pawls were sticking so I put more lube in and it made it much quieter and now I've got the XTs they are very noticeably louder - I don't mind the noise per se and it warns walkers that I am coming but what does STW think.....? Should I take it to bits....?

I always find Shimano hubs really quiet and I thought the new ones are meant to be even quieter.....don’t ever get Hope / industry 9 hubs if this annoys you!

My old XTs are nicely quiet. My 105 R7000 hubs have a nice tick

Yeah, not a hub I’d associate with noisiness. I swapped mine for American Classics which have a lovely tone. Got a new-ish Mavic which makes a nice buzz. Don’t like Hopes, except when someone jumps and they make that air based whizzy noise. I think its spelt fffvvvzzzzzzzzzz

Nope. A nice, subdued ticking.

It's relative I suppose, it's just that it is louder than the 501 I serviced myself. No where near as noisy as my friend's road bike which makes an awful racket (Fulcrum). I suppose I'm just wondering if I should risk taking them to bits to add more grease given that they are brand spanking new...

Yeah that about sums it up. I quite like it and they are smooth as silk/butter/baby's bottom.

Nah - leave them be. I serviced the XT hubs on my Amazon over the winter. It's had a few thousand miles, including some serious river crossings and they were still lovely inside.

👍

I'm not inclined to take them apart for no reason I have to say...

New Shimano XT freehubs are a different design to the old ones, more like an over complicated copy of a chris king ratchet mechanism, and much more fragile.

You can strip and rebuild the new freehubs. They have cartridge bearings. The ratchet can be stripped cleaned and lubed.

Shimano instructions are not to disassemble the freehub or lube the teeth. Make of that what you will.

There are some pictures on instagram of some mechanics rebuilding them.
