Hi there,
I'm building up a bike at the moment and have pretty much settled on an SLX Double Chainset (36T/22T) with a 32T/11T cassette. That's a 35T capacity, ie (36 - 22) + (32 - 11)
I'm planning on an XT Shadow Medium Cage (GS) which is quoted at a 33T capacity which is theoretically not enough. Though, I've heard that the stated 33T capacity is conservative and it "should" work fine.
Just wondering if anyone is using a similar set up with/without problems....

The last thing I want to be doing is worrying about switching into particular gear combos for fear of smashing something.

Think the SLX GS Medium is quoted at 35T capacity so can go with that if need be.
Cheers,

I see how the 35 is calculated but if you were running a triple do you just change the 36 for the size of the outer ring, in which case you'd always be over the allowances?

Yes, pretty much,
So the calculation is (Front Biggest - Front Smallest) + (Cassette Biggest - Cassette Smallest)

it won't smash owt it'll leave the chain slack in small small.

not really an issue cos you wont be in small small will you...

Well, I wouldn't really plan to, but to be honest I'm not always conscious of that cogs I'm in.
Chain being slack and/or dropping I could live with as long as nothing gets smashed.

Running a medium cage XT Shadow with a 11-34t cassette and a 36T-22T double...works fine for me and has down for ages.

:-)Great, thanks nuke, That's basically what I wanted to hear 🙂

Do you have the full range of gears with it?

Setup favouring making sure all gears were working when in the 36T. Possibly not the highest gears when in the 22T but duplicate gearing between being in 36T and 22T meant it didn't matter anyway as you could just shift up to the 36T and drop down a couple of gears on the cassette

One more thing to add is I started with 11-32 cassette and a 36T-22T double then switched the 22T for a 26T to reduce the difference between chainrings then, to compensate went to a 11-34 cassette. Still worked with the 11-32 and 36-22 but thought shifting was better between the chainrings by reducing the difference

as said, you shouldn't be running small-small anyway.

I run the same setup and it's fine.

All you need to know is that you'll be fine.

I have run a SG (mid-cage) shadow mech with a XT triple chain set with no problems whatsoever. Shadow mechs are stupidly long.
