This one: SHIMANO DEORE XT Rear FREEHUB 148x12 mm E-THRU Axle 12-speed | SHIMANO BIKE-EU
There's a few horror stories online, but not loads and I expect its the usual bias of only people who've had issues posting. However, there aren't any long-term reviews I can find either. Has anyone ridden one offroad for any length of time?
I'm not averse to cup and cone so it's fine on that front, it's more the weird freehub I'm cautious about.
Alternatively, if anyone has spotted any relatively affordable ratchet drive/Microspline 148mm hubs, please let me know.
Hmm. Following. I like Shimano hubs and have a couple of bikes with M8000s so I'm also interested in any feedback in the event I'm looking to "upgrade" in future.
How have you found the M8000 hubs Scotroutes?
Faultless.
Not the lightest in the world. Not any problems building them into a good wheelset (I have 3 sets). A wee buzz rather than a loud rattle. I'll give those in my Pact a wee service/regrease in a few weeks for this years riding, but haven't touched them for about three years.
Nice one, that sounds good. I really want Microspline though, so hopefully the M8100s are similar...
I have XT hubs fitted to my EX511 wheels. I sold the bike so the wheels are err waiting for something else... I loved them. Silky smooth and very durable. Where I replaced the bearings on my standard 3 pawl Shimano hubs loads of times these just keep on going. Adjusting the cup and cone was a doddle and could be done in seconds once I found the knack. I took it apart a few times to inspect it but it was all as new every time. I even managed to disassemble the freehub without any bother (including the part that says "do not disassemble"!!🤣). They still run like new after about 1500 - 2000 miles. I bought a load of NTN bearings for the freehub to upgrade when they wore out but they haven't yet!
Oh and the MicroSpline ratchety type freehub is great. Makes a lovely sound too! Not too loud just nice with plenty of engagement.
EDIT - and I think I might have a brand new one in my spares box as I bought a spare 'cos Brexit. Make me an offer if you're interested - I'll have to check I've still got it though...
I had one. I really liked it when it was working. But i had an issue once where the freehub locked open and completely disengaged. it was freezing cold though so maybe the grease was extra thick and sticky?
I took it all apart and tried servicing with the correct grease etc but the freehub then always feel quite sticky and dragged with the wheel. I guess i was doing something wrong but couldn't work it out even following the various guides online, so rebuilt the wheel onto a 104t Bontrager hub i had lying around.
I think they may have changed some bits in the newer models as i've since seen them and they are much louder and don't go silent like mine did.
I really wanted to ride it, and when it was working was great. its still in the shed to try again another day, its just overly complicated when there are much simpler hubs out there i dont have to worry about.
Must confess I was reading this thread yesterday and I somewhat have the fear now: multiple XT M8100 hub failures | Mountain Bike Reviews Forum (mtbr.com)
We have an M8000 rear hub on eldest's bike. He is the Destroyer of Wheels. It lasted longer than the Hope rear wheel freehubs (x2) he broke, and has lasted two rims. Currently sat on a shelf as he bought a cheap CRC Nukeproof wheelset to replace it.
