Just purchased an XT M8100 chainset without ring, they should also put now without f##king tl-fc41 direct mount chainring tool on the box as well, the bike industry can f r o.
Bumpety bump
OEM in a plastic bag or properly boxed up retail shimano?
Just in case you're reading this Shimano, could you please just use Race Face's Cinch direct mount standard on your crankarms, so that I can start buying them again.
Thanks in advance.
Nice idea, but if they were open to that idea, their 12 speed cassette would fit an XD driver.
Great idea. Can you add Onzadog's suggestion to the list as well please Shimano?
And make some 11sp 10-48t cassettes in XD as well while you're at it. For about £50. And weighing no more than 450g.
Thanks again.
I'd like a cable disc GRX lever and brake please, and a modern 8 speed drivetrain with a clutch mech that takes a 3/32" chain.
just to shake the salt and pepper pot, just had the m9120 arrive from CRC comes in XTR box and with a nice solid metal TL-FC41 tool..
A metal tool! Ooo....
i've just taken off the ring, that tool is superb..
lovely smell of grease too..
Can you ask them if XT8000 double spares will be in stock ever again? I had to buy an 11-42 cassette from the Netherlands and a Stronglight chainring from Spain. And another thing.... the chainring bolts use a T30 driver. Could you (Shimano) have used a torx size compatible with other bike bits?
You're a metal tool.
sorry i had to

This is the bike industry, logic was checked in at the door, never to be seen again.
Could you (Shimano) have used a torx size compatible with other bike bits?
To be fair, chainring bolts are bigger and generally need doing up a deal tighter than most other things on a bike where you tend to see Torx bolts (e.g. disc bolts, SRAM MMX lever clusters, etc...)
And another thing…. the chainring bolts use a T30 driver
they'll take that, and instead make all bolts from now on t27
Jam-bo, proper shimano boxed and new stock with 26/04/2021 date on madison's barcode sticker on the box. Confirmed with shop, tool no longer included, I ordered one of those blue fc-41 tools of Ebay for under £6 rather than forking out £20 for a tool that was free pre brexit.
If it makes you feel any better, Ingrid offer a reduced “bundle price” on their version of that tool of €29.40 along with your purchase of €349.99-€399.99 cranks and a €99.99-€119.99 chainring.
they’ll take that, and instead make all bolts from now on t27
A poorly made T27 at that, made out of the finest grade of soft cycling cheese, mounted obscurely so you cant get a tool square on it (think flat mount calipers or the post mount on the back of a commencal)
Good to know shimano have no problem leaving you stranded and unable to complete your bike build for a few days or longer as well as adding another 20+ quid to the budget, they did the same with their mt800 bottom brackets, it's pot luck whether you get the adapter or not when buying online, seems like its not just buying from germany that has hidden costs these days.
Has sillyoldman been on the whisky 🙂, what's he on about and how's it relevant. I think it's an inconvenience issue more than cost, if that's the point he's trying to make.
Am I the only one who's never heard of ingrid, hard to complain about costs when looking for obscure boutique sh*t or whatever ingrid is.
2robo89 I mentioned it tongue-in-cheek as it's a chainset, sold as cranks and seperate ring with a unique lockring pattern - in that respect just like XT (and with no tangible advantage over an XT chainset other than aesthetics). It's well over double the price and the implication is that they are doing you a deal on the bundle price by offering a required tool at 29.40Euros. Makes the XT seem like a steal regardless of whether they come with the tool or not.
My XT and XTR both came with the tool - not sure if this has changed, or if the OP was short-changed. Can see that it would be irritating for it not to be supplied as Ingrid's approach seems unreasonable to me.
As far as I know, all boxed UK stock of BBs through UK importer comes with the required adaptor.
I'm more of a red wine man BTW. 😉
I bought an after market metal socket for £4 from eBay , does the job perfectly ..
Why make a simple thing like a chainring so over engineered (and expensive) I can't see the benefit of a separate spider and chainring on a direct mount crank

One size spider for all ring sizes (I haven't checked) to keep cost down?
Aluminium carrier for steel teeth ring - probably combination of ease of manufacture for each part, weight and right metal in the right place and one blank to make all series carriers from (again not checked explicitly but my XT just looks like a more nicely finished version of my Deore and Wife's SLX). AFAIK the teeth are the same across all series (again, going from memory of reading about XT and SLX comparison).
And they don't seem that expensive (at least when I bought one) compared to one piece alu rings, particularly given the longer wear of a steel ring.
Have to agree about not providing the tool though, especially if you buy cranks without a ring!
