Now maybe I'm being a complete t**t but I'm sure it should be pretty straight forward this.  Attempted to fit my new cranks today, chainring goes on first with the tool that Shimano supplies in the box for you.  In my case, the tool doesn't fit over the crank spindle (stops just past the spline on the non-drive side.  It would need club hammer force to drive it on, that can't be right.

Obviously stuck now as I can't do it up much tighter than a tap with a flat head screwdriver and a hammer.  I'm not convinced that will be tight enough without hitting too hard and wrecking the teeth on the securing nut.

Has anybody else had problems with them?

Photos required.

Are you sure it’s not a BB tool?

It may be the wrong tool as it's certainly supposed to fit

Seems to be the right tool according to the part number too.  Its got Shimano TL-FC41 stamped on the side

Yeah, looks correct, I thought you might have meant the BB tool reducer/adaptor that normally comes with them.

Ok, well seems like I'll have to bite the bullet and send this back and wait for another tool...grrr.  Seems very odd though for Shimano to manufacture something so far out of tolerance.

@uggski the XTR M9100 has a completely different spline to the XT, but the second video is exactly the same as mine.

Either way though, the tool is the same for both models.

You checked for a burr on the crank splines?

Mine was a typically Shimano satisfyingly accurate fit - both over the axle with very little slop, and onto the chainring retaining lockring.

If cranks are OK, I’d be inclined to file out the ID of the tool to get it all together ASAP. Not ideal, but better than returning and waiting on a replacement.

@sillyoldman I did.  The tool goes past the splines and stops just past where the splines end.  I did just wonder about modding the tool.  My friend in the next road has a CNC machine, so I might ask him to do that for me tomorrow...socially distanced delivery and collection by drone of course!

On the inside of the tool, it looks like there is a plastic ring, doesn't seem to be protruding but maybe that could be removed.

There won’t be on mine soon - it’s going to get messy here, don’t watch!

Well I managed to prize the plastic ring out, it sits almost flush in a recess inside the tool.  But a small precision flat head and a rubber mallet nipped it out quite easily.

Success!!!

Ah, you'd left the packaging on the tool 😉

Sorry. Couldn't see the hole on the others and the from the angle it looked like the splines on yours were a bit deeper

Edit. Actually watching the second video a bit longer there is a hole.

Haha, yep let’s call it packaging!

I’m not normally one to butcher things, but given it’s just a tool then I’m ok with that.  Still odd though.

@uggski there’s a hole in mine too.  Trust me I’ve been analysing various videos and photos, I can’t find or see any visible difference.  I think it was manufacturing of the tool rather than the crank being different.
