Ordered a m8000 medium cage rear mech off crc, the box of the one delivered has gs ticked, which is medium cage (I think). However, the cage looks long to me (compared to my previous sram derailleur). Which cage it is isn't marked on the actual mech. Is there a way to tell between the two? Anyone know the length of medium v long cages for xt m8000? Measuring between centre of the two jockey wheel axles I have 87mm which puts it as sgs according to Shelton brown.. But he says biggest rear cog for such a length is 30t, so I wonder if shimano have extended things for wide range cassettes?

They're rather long even in GS guise. Glad I've gone 29" otherwise it'd be pretty low!

Yeah, mine's pretty long even in GS mode, I had to add a couple of links to the chain over my previous SRAM mech.

They are long so make sure your b tension is set on the snug side for more lower cage clearance and better shifting.

Exactly what Matt says, now I've tinkered with the B screw mines shifting exactly as it should. Precise and accurate.
