Much of a difference apart from weight.

Can get the XT for £45 and XTR for £70 - are we just talking 35g or are the internals better? The shimano tech docs suggest the internals are exactly the same?

XTs are just M540s with XT written on them, although £45 is reasonable. XTRs have fluoride coated bindings if that bothers you. IMO they certainly outlast cheap M520s, whether ts worthwhile is up to you though!

Hmm yeh just been looking at the M540's and I'd get these over the XT's - I guess that teh XTR may last a bit longer but these are for my wife on her road bike (wants recessed cleats) and she it pretty light and small so I think I'll got for the M540's and save a big bit of cash 🙂

xtr are race orientated and have a stiffer release than the XT, if you like the locked in feeling they are ace.

Do they? Fairly sure they don't. Certainly none of the XTRs I've ever had have been stiffer.

njee20 yep, part of thier charm, a couple of reviews about from mags regarding this over the years but personal experiance backs this up nicely. in the end however, they are just pedals that seem to work pretty darn well.

I have XTR on my mountain bike and XT on my road bike and only use the same shoes.

If anything the XT pedals feel more secure and locked in, the XTR release adjustment screws are realy soft and can be rounded off easily, they also lose their 'bling' look quickly and look as battered as the next pedals after a month.

In conclusion, I'd go for the XT as they work just as well.

Neither - all my bikes now have 540s - same pedals internally and awesome value.

Can only comment that i have had 2 x XTR set over 3 yrs probably covered over 6k on one set alone and they spin so freely on the spindle. The mags dont test them that long ;-). They are'nt stiff at all IMO on the release compared to an XT as I've run both. Try the Ritchey Paradigms and there stiff in the release.... My opinion of the Ritcheys is that they are light, hate mud pig to engage, dont spin very freely on the spindle and there going on Ebay shortly....

Get the XTR at that price.
