[Closed] Xt hubs - cones keep loosening

I've got a new set of 717 rims on xt hubs, and the cones on the rear hub keep coming loose after every couple of rides. Even when I tighten the locknut right down, they still come loose. I've even had them done in a shop, but they still come loose.

Weirdly my old set of 2005 wheels with xt hubs have never come loose in 5 years of riding.

Anyone have a similar problem with these hubs and know of a good way of fixing it?

Are you sure it's the cones coming loose? I checked mine last week and realised it was the cones wearing down not unscrewing themselves.

I have resorted to blue loctite on the threads to keep them in place (I hope)

Had this problem with XT hubs, I think it's quite common for them to be set too loose at the factory.
Long handled cone spanners were the answer for me, rather than short double ended ones. The lock nuts need to be *really* tight.
Great value hubs when set up right, they last forever with minimal maintenance.

I have the same problem and tbh it's really pissing me off.

I should have paid the extra for hope hubs. Just wished I'd have known before I bought my XT's

As tim41 says, tighten them down with some decent cone spanners (Park Tools do decent ones and not expensive). Easy to clean and service as well; the faff of sticking new balls in every few years vs. replacing cartridge bearing every few months works for me.

god damnit, i kept tightening mine even took it to the Lbs in desperation. Got a Pro 2 wheel built up instead in the end, just couldn't be arsed to keep fixing it.

Right now I can see it down the garage, taunting me 🙁

I had Deore rears with the same problem. I was constantly stripping them down. Got rid of them and got some hopes. Not had to touch them in 2 years but the clicking... Well you won't need a bell.

You guys sure you are tightening both sides? Are you competent mechanics?

I've run shimano hubs for 20 years and wrenched for a few too, never seen this problem.

Crickey, talk about timing.

My rear is very loose, as of yesterday. Tightened last night, no better.

I took the axle out and clamped the locknut in a vice while tightening the cone to it, reasembled it all and tightened the other end on teh bike to get the preload correct, they only came loose once that was before i touched them.

Since i tightened them up they aint shifted 😀

I took the axle out and clamped the locknut in a vice while tightening the cone to it

this suggests to me that one side of the axle could be manufactured non disemblable (perhaps with the cone keyed onto the "nut") so the vice bit wouldn't be necessary...

It could be as i thought of no other reason of not doing it other than to change the cones on their own due to wear, Presonally i would rather buy a rebuild pack with a new axle, cones bearings the lot. Selling them with one side fixed (on rear hubs anyway) as you cant get to the cones to adjust them under the freehub without taking them all apart, Suggestion to shimano?
