For a 1x setup is there anything worth considering (lighter the better) other than xt for the price?

XT a cheap option if you want 165mm cranks or black ones.

SLX are cheaper, and since you're not using the rings, they're basically the same weight.

You will struggle to beat them for value. Usually got 2x10 for £89 ON CRC (sometimes less with discounts). The unused rings sell easily for £30 so you get new cranks and a new BB for under £60.

Correcto welshfarmer thats what I did. Got my last ones off crc for 80, sold the two rings for 35, sold my semi broken old xt cranks for 40 😀

SLX triple, doesn't seem a lot of point in XT if your ditching the rings, would avoid a double as chainline will be less than optimal.

Slx crankarms are 5g heavier and 30 quid cheaper

And the polished crank arms don't look bad after the first muddy ride like xt

And the double had never given me probs with chainline

Middle on a triple is middle of the cassette.
The rings on a double are either side of the middle so neither is optimum.
If you need to, you can use the outer tabs of a double with spacers under the ring to move it in 2.5mm, or move one BB spacer to the non drive side.

My vote is SLX. I went for double.

I had to do both to get the optimum chainline with an XT double crank.

On a double the outer rings chainline is biased towards the higher gears (smaller rings on cassette) , this gives a more extreme chainline (crossover) than a triple would when in lower gears (big rings on cassette).

Middle ring on a triple sits in the middle and is not biased one way or t'other.
