Hi, followed internet instruction on how to service my xt mech as cage wasnt springy anymore. All went well and back together but now the clutch switch wont lockout in On position. Just bounces out

Before I pull apart any tips, advice on what to look for, adjust first

Cheers

Make sure you have the switch on the clutch in the right orientation. The bit that turns inside the cover when switching on, if that makes sense?

Literally did exactly the same thing yesterday. Take the ‘barrel’ thing off it’s mounting post and put it back on the other way up and tighten the small screw back up.

You didn't grease the inside of the clutch part (there are some very specific "do not grease bits")
Just sayin as you obviously did something wrong or followed a YT that was wrong.

In usual times I often prefer replacing the clutch (£10) if its worn. As it happens have to sort out an SLX one this week.

Just to note - I did a successful SLX 11sp clutch service a couple of months ago, but it didn't cure my cage not being springy enough.

Now it's stopped being springy altogether - so I'm just claiming on warranty.

CBF trying any more home fixes on a relatively new part.

clutch service is one thing, removing the outer cage is another that often needs done. you get to clean the tension spring and emery down the pivot/clean the bush, lube back up and have a nice smooth (well, with the clutch off) cage return.

As Lovewookie, if you're going to the trouble of servicing the clutch, might as well do the return spring while you're there. Corrosion on the main bushing is often a cause of reduced return spring force.

The issue the OP describes sound like not getting the snail cam in the right orientation for reassembly.

instructions i followed showed grease on the shaft that the barrel sits on - sounds like thats wrong. i was very careful to reassemble everything in same orientation as before.

i'll pop cover off tonight and check again

barrel (part the metal band goes around) is correct way up, well same as it came off

and yes it feels like the cam just isnt quite going far enough over to lock

There are potentially 4 different orientations of the cam if you just just pick it up and pop it on without looking.
