Hi there,

Can I use a 10 speed XT cassette with 10 speed road STI shifters with an appropriate long cage Road mech?

Thanks in advance.

Use a 9 speed Shimano MTB mech and you'll be fine.

Scotroutes, why the 9speed MTB mech with the road shifters?

After 9 speed, Shimano changed the amount of pull per shift on the road rear mechs, but it still matches 9 speed stuff (road or MTB) with 10 speed STIs. So an XT771 shadow rear mech is a good choice.

Because that works. I've been running a tourer like that for years.

The shifting ratios of 10-speed Shimano Road and MTB are different.

I have 10sp 105 shifters with 10sp XT cassette and 9sp XT long cage mech. Works absolutely no problem. XT 9 speed mechs are still widely available.

Or get a Lindarets road link and run a road mech with a big cassette or get the Tanpan which will allow you to run a mtb 10sp clutch mech with your road shifters.
I use the road link and it works a treat, 105 short mech and a 11-36 cassette. I've even put the expander on and run a 40t!

Old Ultegra road 10 speed, SLX 10 speed 11-36 and new Alivio m4000 9speed rear works fine here.

A standard 10s 105 short cage rear mech can take a 36 cassette but only on a single ring. The short cage definitely wouldn't handle a double. With a longer cage you might cope with the chain slack but I suspect you need the tighter chain length to make sure the offset top jockey wheel clears the 36t.

This is the setup I'm using, mostly just because it was what I had. Otherwise it would probably be a 9s mtb mech.

Got old 10 speed Ultegra shifters, old 9 speed XTR medium cage and an 11- 40 Praxis Works Cassette. Works great but could do with better barrel adjustment. The inline one I've got is a bit crap. Hoping by the time everything fails I'll be able to match 11 speed clutch mech and big cassette with 11 speed STIs without the need of an aftermarket modification.

I too have a 9spd rear xt derailleur working with 10spd ultegra brifters, 46t front ring and 11-36 XT cassette on one bike and compact 34/50 105 with 11-36 xt on another.

works fine, but be sure to have a straight derailleur pad
