Help needed for a mate!

We were out on Tuesday when my mate noticed that his 6 lower gears(biggest cogs) of his XT cassette had a fair amount of lateral movement. So much so that it sounds like a bag of spanners when changing gear.

Wheels are Hope pro evo hubs and XT cassette, both are only two months old.

We've got an uplift day booked on Monday so we're trying our best to sort it before then.

Any ideas what it could be? Is it possible the XT cassette carrier has been damaged? I wouldn't of thought the hub was knackered already!

Thanks guys

Could be totally unrelated (I'm certainly no techie) but I run an XT cassette on a Pro 2 Evo and in the last 6-10 months I've had two Hope bearings fail - both warranty jobs. The second time it was a new bearing in a new (warranty replacement) wheel from Hope, so no question of the bearing being a cheap one or being badly fitted. The silver outer race had literally split. Mechanic in our workshop noticed it when he detected excessive rattling/play in the cassette. The first bearing fail wrote off my whole hub (Hope sorted on warranty).

Had the same problem, rivets most probably knackered that hold the cassette together.

I had this. The two of the three bearings in the freehub had disintegrated.

I had that twice in a row on XT cassettes - the rivets gave up. Both times it was successfully dealt through warranty claim, then I moved to Deore cassettes - no problems with them at all.

Were hoping its just the cassette but if the bearings are shot like wl's then it's a warranty job. No chance they'll turn around a wheel in 3 days!

We'll whip the cassette off later and have a butchers, 2 month old XT cassette and it could be dead already.... I bet that doesn't happen very often.
