I know that a shimano xt 12 speed chain has a front and a back so you fit it letter side outwards.
Does it have a top and bottom? I heard someone say that the word shimano has to be upwards but the chain has links with shimano on going up and down.
Here's the fitting instructions from Shimano's website.
the Shimano doc doesn't say. It shows the letters facing outwards and the right way up, but doesn't say whether this snapshot is the top run (to the chainring) or the bottom run (to the mech), so it's not unequivocal.
I had a good look at an XT chain on a recent install and there didn't appear to be any difference to the plates, so I suspect it doesn't matter which way up the letters are, as long as the letters face outwards.
Knowimg how Shimano work, if it had to be a certain way up then the wording on the chain would all be one way up and the instructions would be very specific.
No top or bottom, just the arrow on the link should point to your jockey wheel.
No top or bottom, just the arrow on the link should point to your jockey wheel.
Umm, surely that should say that the arrow should point in the direction that the chain is moving?
Pedantic 🤫

Well if the chainlink is on the top run of the chain then the arrow is pointing away from the jockey wheels so just correcting your inaccurate, confusing statement.
Who the f#ck attaches the chain at the top, it's obvious what I meant, stop being a dick.
The chain link arrow points to the bottom jockey wheel when it's at bottom, when its at the top it points away from bike, so only a numpty could be confused, hardly an inaccurate or confusing statement.
Obvious what they meant.
Guess some people just like to nit pick and irritate, even going to the trouble of finding and uploading pics, sad.

ah but what about back-pedalling...
Don't you just love STW.
